I think the feeling is... Fowler is good. But not $10 million per year good. Especially considering he would not be part of the 2016 Astros lineup.
I'm still scratching my head on the Gattis trade... I didn't see where that move made the organization tremendously stronger.
Scratching even more now. Yes, both trades plug some holes. But damn if they don't expose a few others.
The team will be different this year, that's for sure.

sounds like valbueno is a poor man's Kike Hermandez

Keep telling yourself that while ignorantly looking at one statistic and probably never having even watched him play a game let alone an entire season.

It's a pretty good deal for the Astros in my opinion. Dexter Fowler is a good hitter with a good OBP, but he gets injured way too often, his defense is mediocre, and he wasn't going to be an Astro after this year so might as well get some value for him. Luis Valbuena can and should end up starting at 3B since Matt Dominguez is not very good, and Dan Straily should be able to crack the starting rotation immediately. Valbuena and Straily both have great potential and if they play up to it, it will be a great deal for us.

Astros got great value in this deal. Can't believe anyone is saying otherwise.
Cubs probably paid a tad higher price than value, but it's worth it when you are upgrading a major hole from positions of depth. And most importantly, not having to trade a prospect.
Almora is the CF of the future. This gets us another year closer to him and allows us to compete in 2015.

The Cubs in their 73 wins last year, actually got some career years from players, such as Valbuena and especially Coghlan. Valbuena has had 2 improved years in a row, so he may just be one of those late bloomers.
Fowler walks a lot, but that's about it. He's not a particularly good defender either.
Where the Astros screwed up was Gattis. I think it was fine to package some prospects to get an outfielder in. But get a young one and a complete outfielder - they certainly could have for that package. Gattis is a Trumbo type.

It's 2015, no one cares about average anymore.
Altuve won a batting title and Fowler got on base at the same clip as him.
Valbuena was solid butCubs needed a veteran OF. After all Valbuena was a waiver pickup by Cubs.

Fowler is not near the player Altuve is. I really liked Fowler, don't get me wrong. I just find it humorous that the Astros got trade raped in this deal.

I'm just saying, OBP is the new Avg. Fowler isn't as good overall but despite the difference in average, they get on base the same amount.
Valbuena was .340 OBP despite a low average. That's better than league average

Fowler is a Ken Griffen jr. Clone

Bingo. Cubs have been after a veteran outfielder since the winter meetings, they needed some speed, they needed higher OBP and they wanted a true leadoff man. They got all of those in one player.
Obviously a move the Cubs felt strongly about since they gave up Straily (a major league ready starting pitcher) and 2 years of Luis Valbuena for 1 year of Fowler.

And improved pretty significantly in his time in Chicago and became a very under appreciated player that produces a quality at bat almost every PA and sees a ton of pitches.

The young pitchers in the Gattis and Fowler deals have me intrigued. I think if anyone can access the potential, it's our pitching coach.

Yeah, but in 200+ less at bats than Altuve. No one is arguing that Fowler doesn't get on base at an elite level. He just isn't on the field enough. For his career so far, he has been equivalent to a part time player by rarely getting more than 450 ABs in a season.

Fowler's a walker. That's his skill.
Valbuena had an OPS about the same as Fowler.
Trade looks good for both teams to me.

And his career OBP is like 366.
Altuve only touched that in what will be his career year.

I like this deal for both sides, but I actually think thought that Fowler would be a straight swap for Valbuena. Getting Straily as well makes this a nice return for the Astros. Both Fowler and Valbuena do a great job of getting on base.
I always liked Fowler, so I am excited to see him as a Cub.
