We absolutely upgraded in recruiting ability over Chavis. I'm just reserving judgement for on field performance.

You mention he's a great recruiter, fantastic. I guess we can fire Frank Wilson now.

Who's going to coach these great recruits Steele is going to find for us once they get here? His record as a DC or Head Coach is not good. We didn't hire him as a position coach.

ummm....they hired a positions coach to be DC. If they wanted to go that route Haley should have been the only option.

you can really look at this clown's resume and say with a straight face he's the best man for the job?

Its perfectly fine to be upset with a hire that doesnt look good on paper. And it doesnt. Recruiter? Great! How is he at coordinating defenses?

Actually it's really immature and childish to freak out over a hire before the man has even coached a game here.

Especially before we see what happens with national signing day and...you know actually seeing what happens on the field.

Sure, by "name" this isn't the best hire. But he's proven to be a solid recruiter. Has a lot of support from many other coaches including Saban.

It's almost comical how many people have said things like "we could have had Shoop" like 95% had a clue who he was before mentioned on this board.

I know this post will be flamed. But intelligent answers would be appreciated.

because until quite recently this was an elite elite top 5 program. The fact that you hire this guy is an illustration that the golden era is coming to an end. He might not be a disaster, maybe he will be good, but if your an elite elite program you don't get guys that could possibly work out. Just ask yourself this if Kirby Smart had got a HC gig do you think Kevin Steele would have been a serious candidate for the Alabama DC?

1. Realizing LSU is not the program who we all thought it was with coaches beating down the doors

LSU is a top-tier program. Baton Rouge is just not the coveted destination many fans think it is. It's an acquired taste that I love, but it's not for everyone.

2. This is LSU. You expect excellence in coaching hires

Yeah, aside from Saban and Miles. We've had a long history of that.

Many of the coaches seeking interviews were trying to get a pay increase where they were. This is exactly what I don't like about turnover. It never turns out quite the way you expect it.

I agree with you that Steele is a huge upgrade over Chavis in recruiting, but was a recruiting based hire needed? We have Raymond, Frank, and Grimes with Ed O rumored to be posibably joining the staff. We didn't need to sacrifice Xs and Os for a recruiter.

I'd say its hardly irrational. Due to the fact that Miles refuses to run anything within 60 years of a modern offense, he needs a lights out defense to carry the team. Kevin Steele was fired from his only DC jobs. He's a bad defensive coordinator and this is a shitty hire.

Here are some of the reasons for the meltdown. I'll let you decide whether or not it is irrational.

1. LSU lost a proven DC to a conference foe. Not a good look.
2. Miles took his time a "did due diligence" only to come up with this hire
3. Steele may end up doing great but if his recent history is any indication (and that's all we have to go by) he's an unsuccessful retread. He was awful as a HC, got demoted by Saban, got fired from Clemson, sat out of coaching and eventually became a position coach again.
4. Many on here and in local media were spouting every name in the book, including NFL DCs (that was yesterdays story) and we end up with a position coach that got fired from his previous jobs.

I don't expect you to melt or even question anything Miles does. It will be interesting to see how your posts change moving forward into next year and beyond.

I melted about 3 years ago and won't again. Not worth it.

Lighten up Francis, it was a joke. You defend Miles no matter what, even this shitastic hire. I get a kick out of it.

Not sure.

You are acting like I am thrilled and happy with the hire. All I'm saying is let's at least see what happens on the field where it actually matters.

A caller near the end of AFR asked Moscona if Bama or Auburn would make the same hire...Moscona's response was "ALABAMA ALREADY HIRED THE GUY! LSU TOOK HIM FROM BAMA!"

Now Matt...

Would Bama or Auburn hire him as a Coordinator?? HELL NO!

Even A&M did better than Steele!!!

He had one bad year as a DC. His body of work does not suck. He's also been one of the best recruiters in the country in the past decade per Rivals.
