I know some people that put a party barge in around St Louis and came down to 3 Rivers. Granted this was 20 years ago, but they did it.

I'm pretty sure you have to get permission to be in the river in front of exxonmobil's docks. I remember some people getting picked up by the coast guard right there a few years ago.

Mississippi River Quest is a decent documentary I watched on Nat Geo. Three men take six weeks to navigate the 2,300-mile Mighty Mississippi -- from the headwaters all the way to the Gulf. They use a variety of vessels -- everything from kayaks to pontoon boats -- as they endure storms, unpredictable waters, four-to-six foot high waves created by barges, runaway logs that could punch giant holes in their boat at any time, and even a hurricane.

The Rouge-Orleans relay run along the river levee from BR to NO is 126 miles...

At 4 mph, about 32 hours...

I've participated in several races kayak races up near Natchez and Vicksburg, MS.

I've Flipped once due to white caps and got washed out of the river into "paw paws chute" spillway. I was holding onto the kayak and was able to grab an expose tree root to pull myself out. This was during the record flood several years ago. It was the day after Joplin Missouri got hit with tornados I think.

Don't do it. There's a post on this website about a guy that tried to kayak across the river and narrowly escaped alive.

Sleeping is the hard part. Nowhere to tie off out there in the middle of the river

Farther than I thought. If it's 126 miles it might take me 15-16 hours.

my uncle used to take us out on his boat in the river. My cousin and brother even went swimming near the casino (with vests on).
We put in near riverside towing, there was a semi-boat ramp there.
We weren't the only ones doing it.
