OB's thought on what happened this morning.

I shoot an 8 point this morning at 200 yards that was following a doe. He jumps straight up when I shoot, doesnt do the lung kick, just straight up. He then wheels around and runs in the cutover. He was in a big water hole when I shot, I find alot of hair floating on the water but no blood obviously. I follow the trail he ran in on (very thick cutover, this trail was his only option) and only find one drop of blood about the size of an eraser with what looks like to be fat in the blood. This blood drop was about 20 yds from where he was shot. Thoughts?

What color hair? Sounds a little gutty

Was it white hair? Sounds like you may have shot low and just clipped him. Sucks, but doesn't sound like it will be lethal.

I'd guess you clipped brisket

No doubt. Hate to hear that.
ETA: Do they still mule kick when you hit the gut? I always heard that they bowed their back instead. Luckily, I've never gut shot one.

Hard to say on the hair color because its in a muddy water hole.

def sounds gutty to me. i shot a doe earlier this yr quartering hard away, hit back flank and bullet stopped just inside the opposite shoulder. hair only is all i found, no blood what so ever. The deer jumped straight up like you are talking about 6' when i shot.
i luckilly recovered cause she was laying dead on the trail on the walk out abuot 150 yds away

Just climbed back in the stand and 2 does and a nice 7 point just came out of the same trail I have been crawling on my hands and knees for the past hour on. Unbelievable

My experience they'll jump up when you hit em low or in the gut. Most time a brisket smack will knock em over. But he could have nicked it. Hair color should tell the tale

Could have shot him in the big toe.

Hair color should determine where you hit the deer. Mostly white = gut. Mostly brown = most likely brisket.
