More like a waste of time.

Of course cops believe reading is a waste of time.

That is basically begging for the cops to give you trouble.
You say that, but they literally just looked his papers over and waved him through without even requesting he roll the window down or talk to them at all.
This doesn't strike me as an a-hole move and I don't understand where people who say it is are coming from. The driver didn't make it any more difficult for them to do their job. In fact he made it more expedient and less dangerous for the cops than normal, assuming they're just doing their jobs. I'm sure the good cops would love it if they never needed to have a driver roll down the window, since that eliminates the situation where they unintentionally pull over someone with arrest warrants who gets desperate and starts firing. And there's no rummaging around for papers, no conversation which includes no petulant whining from the drivers who are stuck-up assholes, etc.
Honestly this is pretty great, the only cops who are going to start trouble with this are the ones who were looking to start trouble anyway and who are also dumb enough to do it with the virtual certainty that they're being recorded.

I was in Australia last June. Spent a lot of time on the road. This is how roadblocks work down under:
--Any time of day.
--TWO cops set up a few cones.
--At random or a set number (every fifth or third car, IDK), they detour a car through the roadblock.
--Driver rolls down window, and is presented with a breathalyzer.
--Driver blows.
--Sober driver moves on.
--"drink driver" goes to jail.
.05% BAC is legally drunk in OZ.
That's the way it is.
I witnessed it quite a few times.
Per Wiki:
ETA: The only thing I like about it is that they only use two or three cops, instead of having 25 or 30 cops milking the public over time system.

Australian law allow police officers to stop any driver and perform a random breath test without reason. Roadblocks can be set up - for example leading out of town centres on Friday and Saturday nights, or during football or other events - where every single driver will be breath-tested.

Well Australia doesn't have the 4th amendment so they can do that, here we do.

But by all means, if people want to hang a baggy with their shite in it out of the window on a string, whatever.
Id love to be there when some dumbass drug dealer realizes he used his old ziplock bag and uses the bag he had weed in. Not because Im against legalization of weed, but because I get a kick out of the dumb criminal stories. And we all know someone would be stupid enough to do it.

LPSO and BRPD probably would have escalated the situation.

FTR, I've gotten stopped 4 times in 25 years when I should have gotten a DWI, cop never had a clue. The only one I ever got one was because I had a full crown drink sitting in my drink holder and my car reeked of bourbon from the other knuckleheads in my car. I was 20 years old at the time and it was swept under the rug.
So you're a piece of shite then? No wonder you hate the law

How hard is it to roll down the window give them your shite and move on. If this keeps drunks off the roads I'm all for it.

It should be noted that the Aussie cops had to use a breathalyzer. They couldn't make the claim that they sounded drunk or smelled alcohol.

I don't trust cops as it is.... I was arrested by Sorrento police after drinking one 16oz beer and admitting to it (I had 5 cold 16oz beers in the car left from the 6 pack), THEN I voluntarily submitted to a breathalyzer on the scene and passed it with a .02 BUT was still arrested with the cop giving the excuse "I would hate to trust the breathalyzer and allow a drunk driver to drive off and kill someone. Would rather be safe than sorry."... So I had to pay a bail bonds man money to bond me out. I had to pay a row truck driver that towed my car. IT's a fricking kick back racket.... This was on a Saturday, on Tuesday I got a letter in the mail saying that the charge was being dropped.... It's a fricking racket to get your money.

I am going to put this out there and this is just my opinion others may differ and that is fine. In August of 1967 my 2nd oldest brother who was 2 years old at the time was killed by a drunk driver. My Dad permanently crippled. Only has half of his knee cap and his knee is wired together. Even with all of that I do not support DWI checkpoints. The way the whole thing is done encourages corruption by the police. Each dept. gets extra funds to pay for and man these checkpoints. Police get overtime pay to work these checkpoints. They awards for the amount of drunks they catch. We just had a story in the media a week or 2 ago where a girl was arrested for DWI and was stone cold sober. I am sure most of us have been through these check points at one time or another. Damn near every time their are 20 plus cops working. All of this money being spent to set up at one spot on a hwy for 5-6 hours and it has to be public knowledge ahead of time. This money would be much better spent if you put each of these cops in a cruiser and have them actually patrol the streets. Not to mention that its a violation of your rights to be randomly stopped and questioned.

My rights, my rights. yadda yadda yadda...I can't believe how people are such dicks when it comes to DUI checkpoints....if you aren't doing wrong what's the problem? just comply.

This.
Every day, more rights are eroded in the name of "the common good".
DUI checkpoints may occasionally catch a drunk driver, but they are far more likely to be abused by poorly trained, corrupt police. It is an extremely poor use of law enforcement resources and by and large, it is a pain in the arse for the 99.9% sober drivers that are legally traveling public roads.
