Don't use newspaper. I usually tare pieces off the charcoal bag. Its a more dense paper and I never get ash flying around. Paper bags from the grocery store work well too.

I have used one several times. It takes extra time, if you are looking to cut down on chemicals or something this isn't exactly an alternative.

I have one like that. I picked it up at Harbor Freight for around $20. I love it. Pour charcoal in pit, and 2 minutes later my coals are lit and ready to go. I use lump charcoal, so can't comment on how it does with briquettes. I use propane, so not sure about NG conversion. I've also used it a couple times for burning weeds when I didn't want to wait a day or two for weed killer to do it's thing.

What's wrong with a good ol Bic?
I just hold it side ways in 3-4 places so it doesn't burn my finger..

I use a propane burner and a chimney starter filled with lump coal. No newspaper, no lighter fluid and is burning in 2-3 minutes. Also check into a looftlighter - all you need is an electrical outlet.

Propane torch is the best method I've found. Quick, clean, cheap and effective.

I use those parafin cubes in my chimney with a propane lighter

I got an Akorn for Christmas. I've just used 2 cotton balls with a little olive oil on them. Have worked flawlessly.

i cook on my grill (a lot) and i use this chimney everytime.

the bottom is an ingenious design, that lets the coal light very fast.
when i don't use pieces of the charcoal bag or brown paper bags from the store, i put about 6-10 pieces of instant light charcoal on bottom of my lump coal to get it started.
works like a champ everytime.

Mapp gas torch. Works great. Use it exclusively in my Primo.

If you use a propane torch on a painted pit, it will burn the paint off, not sure about what it would do to a weber. If you have a ceramic pit, a propane torch is the way to go.

I use MAPP gas with a weed killer torch handle to light charcoal in my Green Egg. Burns significantly hotter than propane, gets things going quickly.

I've used one to light firewood on a pit. But that's a little overkill for charcoal.

Been using a MAPP torch on my BGE for the last 7 years and it's working much better than those electric charcoal starters (which burn out quite easily and are more expensive).
The only issue with the torch is you have to be there for the whole 2 or so minutes and might get bombarded with sparks depending upon how much moisture your charcoal contains.

I light my charcoal chimney using the side burner on my propane grill or set in on the propane fish cooker. No mess and it's lit in a couple of minutes.

I use the harbor freight weed burner to light my lump for hot cooks and the whole foods starters for low and slow.
