re: I think Chavis made a huge mistake

quote:The "Miles Clause" isn't about Miles! It's about an assistant to a head coach, period. It's very common. If a head coach leaves, the new one wants to bring in his guys. Chavis either didn't want to be replace or, more likely, get paid the full 3-4 yr contract when he did. Guaranteed money for not coaching. Perfect retirement plan.
It sounds like he didn't want to be tied to Miles so maybe or maybe he just wanted Alleva to trust in him independently

Chavis doesn't recruit.

Quite possibly true...

Orgeron is one of those guys from Louisiana that has always had something against LSU.
This is factually incorrect. He's stated many times that he harbors no hate for LSU. He's been in a position to recruit and coach against LSU, so many people assume he doesn't like the tigers but it's merely the fact that he was doing his job...trying to out recruit, coach us.
He has said many times that he has great respect for the program, coaches, and players.

Don't you love it when people just make shite up?

Well if we are to believe some folks, Miles really wanted him gone and finessed him into leaving using A&M as the motivator while using Alleva as the bad guy/good guy team.
That theory would have more weight if Coach Miles had not been so stunned by the news of Chief's departure.
If this theory were true, Miles's public comments would have displayed more confidence and control over the situation.
BUT, we are all just speculating, so, we are all entitled to our own opinion.
I do agree that the "Miles was and is in control and engineered Chief's departure" is the best propaganda to disseminate for the sake of the program.

I think he left because he was not paid and locked in to the same contract/money as Cam. Purely about ego and money. Nothing wrong with it just the way I see it.

No. For the fans, this is a passion. For the coaches, this is a livlihood.

I agree. A&M is IMO a nearly impossible job for a DC, unless their offense changes drastically. Although he will likely improve their defense, it still won't be anywhere near as good as LSU's.
Then again, maybe the move was purely money-related. In which case, he got his.

But, it still makes one wonder whether he was confident that LSU was going to win anything in the next few years.
If he were confident of improvement, I think he stays.
Come on man? And aTm is going to win something? What has Sumlin done to show you that his teams are championship worthy other than play JFF for two seasons?
If the rumors are true and Chief wanted more money and "DC for Life" status, then I support Alleva and lsu for not matching the offer.
If Chavis thinks that college station is greener pastures and wants to go over there, best of luck. I believe LSU could benefit greatly from some infusion of youth and enthusiasm on the coaching staff, especially if it's Pendergast.

For all his good, I will remember Chief for his giftwrapping two victories to Bama, among others. Easy to overlook the fact that he had the best defensive talent in the country to work with! Can he attract that talent to A&M? Lot harder on a defense that gets little rest from a team working out of a spread offense. Good riddance to him; my only concern is the timing, because we missed out on some DC candidates and we are too close to signing day.

I agree with the OP that Chief made a mistake.
I don't know what he's thinking, except that IMHO, if Chief could see "LSU National Champs" in the foreseeable future, he probably stays.
No, I don't think aTm wins many SEC West championships in the near future, not with Saban at Bama.

The man has been around football a long time. He didn't just think of that shite out of the blue.
For whatever reason, Chavis clearly has his doubts about Miles being present at LSU beyond what Chavis' contract would've gone through.

Listen up dumb arse. Any solid coach can game plan a defense when it has the talent LSU has enjoyed. What is telling is when the game is on the line and the dc is in a chess match with the opponent's OC.......and Chavis sucked in that situation in big games over the years.
This isn't the game day huge loss that you all are making it out to be. It MIGHT have a negative short term on recruiting, that's it!
Did you ever think how excited a player will be to play for a coach like P that has coached at the top of the NFL ranks in a super bowl?
Chavis coach d at Tenn and LSU...end of story

His contract is guaranteed for three years, which is when he wants to retire. He'll be over half a million dollars richer, after taxes, when he retires. While I agree with your astute football analysis, this is not a mistake.
Also, Texas has no state income tax, so he guaranteed even more money no matter what happens on the field/Sumlins career.
For the LSU fans who complain about our "corporate shift," I can't wait to see how the Ags end up paying for these blank checks they keep writing.

Chavis is overrated! Glad he's gone. Texas A&M doesn't quite have LSU type athletes on defense, they'll find out he's not what he's cranked up to be.

As for Orgeron "hating" LSU, I do not believe this for a second. It's hard for me to believe that as a high-profile coach from Louisiana, he wouldn't consider LSU as his dream job as a HC, somewhere in the future.
Taking the job as a DC would be a major step in that direction....
