re: Why did "The Killing" not succeed?

IMO, The Killing was an average show. Average acting, very average writing. I thought the 4th season was pretty terrible. I admit, I watched that right after I finished Twin Peaks and could not help but compare the two which is probably a little unfair. I thought Sarah Linden was a pretty bad character to hang a show on. Zero redeeming qualities. Her terrible parenting became a joke to me in the third and fourth season
IMO, YO sucks

The way they ended season one. If you watch on Netflix it didn't impact you the way they kept everyone on the hook, promised resolution, and didn't deliver.
I kept watching though.

I think it should have been solved in one season and then ended.
I think the Fargo one season formula from earlier this year is perfect for some of these ideas.

It succeeded pretty well for a show that takes a season (or sometimes two) to solve a single murder.
Shows in long term soap opera format where you have to watch every episode have it tough anyway unless they are really compelling.

you see...I find the show very compelling.
When dat bass line drops at the end of every episode and they are about to reveal a new clue...it moves a little.

Damn instant gratification society.
Nah, it just came off as shitty "with a twist" type writing. The writing improved as the show progressed. Unfortunately their early issues screwed the pooch.

All the ads for the first season were "Who Killed Rosie Larson?" And then they ended the season without solving the mystery. It was a double bird to the audience. We hate watched the second season. It was really stupid with the bit SPOILER
where a politician gets charged with the murder of a teenage girl, then he gets shot and paralyzed, then the murder charges are dropped and then he discloses that he attempted suicide a few months earlier. And he still manages to get elected mayor of Seattle after all this happens in a few week!
END SPOILER
I thought the acting was good, but I felt bad for the cast because the writing was so fricking stupid. The same thing went on with Halt and Catch Fire.

But it was just slow and gloomy with everyone having a shitty life and it always raining. I realize they did the rain thing for a reason and it's based in Seattle or whatever but it just made the episodes drag on.

I thought it was great. Plan on wrapping it up this weekend.

I think they sold it based on the first season and then the writing went to shite.

Just finished Season 4.
Not thrilled with the ending. Sort of saw the part with Colonel Raines coming.
I liked Linden coming back for Holder....My wife hated that part. Says they shouldn't be together.
I don't think it was a romantic reunion. I think they are both damaged people that trust no one but themselves...and each other.

spoilers:
I was really into it when it was on AMC.
Fans got really pissed at the end of season 1 and stopped watching. I personally loved season 1, but fans were basically promised that the killer would be revealed by the seasons end, and they were not.
It got quite a bit worse after season 1 IMO also.

I don't know about that...season 3 was pretty damn good, but by then the show's fate was sealed. I did think season 4 was a dud though.

My main complaints about the first two seasons were entire episodes that went nowhere and storylines that seemed to be completely pointless and added nothing to the story.
Season three had a little of that but not as much.
