Why is it considered selfish for married couples not to want children?

I've heard/read people say this and don't really understand why it's such a big deal not having children.

we were put on this earth to reproduce. Having children once married is part of your purpose.

It's selfish but that doesn't mean it's a bad thing.

I've have no problem with this. At one point, that was our plan. Plans change. The only part we didn't have worked out was who would care for us when we were older. Some people's kids won't care for them anyway, so that wasn't a big difference.

Since reproducing is really the purpose of sex with the added benefit of pleasure, I'd say it's pretty selfish.

I don't think it is. Do you really want your children to have to deal with this country full of idiots in 20 years? I don't.

Most of those are probably religious reasons. I personally don't think it is any of my business if someone does or doesn't want kids. Personally though it has made me a better person to have them. I think it has made me grow exponentially. I was an only child and wanted a larger family than I had. To each his or her own though.

Are married couples with the inability to have children (naturally) who choose to use in vitro instead of adopting selfish?

If not for children , why tie yourself to one vagina for the rest of your life?

If you're well to do people and are at least middle to upper middle class and make bank with high moral character, it's your solemn duty to make your contribution to out reproducing the hoodrats, white trash and nanny state moochers.

People with kids want others to be as miserable as they are.

I think it's more selfish to have children if you don't want them or have the means to provide them with a better life that you had as a kid.

Meh, I think this country would be better off if at least 20% of the ignorant selfish population wouldn't re-produce. People are stupid, so no use having kids if you are too stupid to know how to raise them.
The figure goes much higher for 3rd world in regards to who probably shouldn't have kids.

I guess it could be if only one does and the other doesn't but regardless being selfish is an admirable quality. Why is it bad to look out for your own self-interest and do what makes you happy?

I don't think it's selfish. I think it's pretty unselfish if you know you don't want kids and don't buckle under the pressure to have them so you don't bitterly raise kids you didn't want in the first place.

That being said, as a woman I don't really understand how someone can feel that eay. But they may think I'm crazy with my 3. Who knows?
