The Mayor chose to separate himself from the NYPD and side with the agitators for political reasons and now that there are two murdered cops, there are consequences for him to face.

quote:Why does he have to choose between supporting law enforcement or protestors? Is acknowledging the concerns of one community necessarily abandoning the other? Seems to me like the NYPD is, and has been, indifferent to the concerns of those their policing. Their defensive and hostile reaction to criticism is part of the problem, and contributes to the current environment. That mentality needs to change, across law enforcement. They don't get to demand absolute loyalty to the exclusion of citizens' concerns.

They won't be welcome in the communities they're policing, good intentions or not, if they're indifferent to, and removed from, the concerns of the people they're policing.

The NYPD union did not support the mayor, as he was against the "stop & frisk" law that the previous major instituted. The mayor attacked the union all during his election & they did not support him. And now never will even though he is their "supreme commander".

Did he separate from the entire department or just "rear naked choke" cop? I can see how he had to separate himself from situation and not take a side really.
The actions of one dumbass cop and one psycho frick should not fester like this. There hasn't been enough time to fester.

I wish cops all across the country would protest by refusing to write petty tickets.

My view of the cops is rather complicated. On one hand I am in opposition to their militarization and their increasing function as a fund raising entity via traffic tickets.
Having said that, when it is "pick a side" time, I'm going with the cops. I'll support the cops a million times before I support a bunch of thugs and a bunch of shitty millennials that think their only route to cultural relevance is to sanction and support ridiculous, false narratives regarding race in 2014 America that have been implemented by hard core leftists for the purposes of deconstructing the fabric of our society so that it can be rebuilt in their pathogical image. They are silly pawns in a destructive plan.

I don't recall mentioning Deblassio.

If Mayor deBlasio is really working constructively with NYPD to ensure officer safety and effectiveness, why the HATE?
Of course in reality DeBlasio is not working constructively with the NYPD. In fact he is working far more closely with organizers responsible for pushing the "hands up -- and -- i can't breathe" narrative, than he is with the NYPD. Those individuals are same organizers whipping the community into a disabling frenzy which has concomitantly led to officer endangerment, injury, and death.

quote:They, like every other unionized government work force, are unaccustomed to criticism. Rather than acknowledge and address the concerns of the mayor and protestors, they have dismissed those concerns as cop hating and played victim, for weeks before this. Rather than accept any responsibility for the anti cop atmosphere in New York City minority communities, that has existed for quite a long time before De Blasio said anything at all, they have shifted all blame for that atmosphere onto others.
So I'll ask you the same question asked to another poster, why does the NYPD HATE the Mayor at this point?

I did not reference the mayor in the post you were responding to. The post that you responded to made no reference to the mayor. It was in a completely different vein.

quote:So no other Mayor in the country contends with unions. No other mayor of a major city has criticized his/her Police Force and/or Police Union. I'm just asking. Because if, as you say, this is like every other unionized government work force interface, it certainly seems uniquely caustic.

quote:Christie and Walker, both as governors, have reformed teachers unions and received similar treatment. If Walker hadn't deliberately exempted law enforcement from his reforms, he likely would have received the same from them. The response is only unique in it's vitriol if you limit it to police unions, something I think is a huge mistake.
So no other Mayor in the country contends with unions.

quote:Christie and Walker both aggressively attacked their teacher's unions. They aimed to "break them". The claim here is that deBlasio has done nothing of the sort.
