pretty convincing case that he is the clear 2nd best player on the team, is having his best year ever, and at 24yrs old will only get better

My point is simple. Jrue Holiday is great, and he is good for this team. He has shown that he has the potential to be the 3rd, possibly even 2nd, best player on a championship team. It doesn’t matter who he isn’t. What matters is that he is an exceptional player on both ends of the floor, and we can build a team around him and Davis.

You won't find a much bigger Jrue supporter than me, but in what world is he possibly the second best player on a championship team?

In the world of a balanced roster. The Heat are an exception to the norm.

correct
he can be the 2nd best player on a championship caliber team with a super duper star and a well constructed balanced roster
there is only one champion each year and the winner can credit luck just as much as on court play. championship caliber means 2nd round with a shot at the conf finals

who was the 2nd best player for the spurs last year?
Posted on 12/20/14 at 2:19 pm to TotesMcGotes
Jrue's defense could certainly make him the second best player on a championship team.

for starters, jrue was once an all star. and you dont need 2 AD's to win a championship..
but you do need a couple more players just as good as jrue.
atleast 1 more for this team.

Over the last decade, one team has won the championship without a bonafide superstar, and two teams have won without two. The latter involved Dirk going Supernova for a whole postseason.

I'm not sure what Jrue being an All Star in the east three years ago has to do with anything.
Look, I love Jrue. I think he's the third best player on a championship team. But you need another star. Or a nearly perfect roster (stumbled upon once every 10 years or so). Or a coach who can manage to level the playing field. Unless there's a Carlisle or Pop waiting out there, I don't see us getting that.

Jrue is the second best player on the team. However does that make us championship caliber? It's hard to argue that unless he holds this elevated level of play for a long time. Assuming we don't improve in coaching, our 2nd best player has to be an All-Star. Over the last 20 years, NBA championship teams either had multiple All-Stars or one top level player and a top Head Coach. Currently we don't have either

Jrue >> 2014 Tony Parker
Posted on 12/20/14 at 2:56 pm to Galactic Inquisitor
Maybe, but the Spurs are such an anomaly. We're not going to find a Pop or a GM who can turn rags to riches like they have.
Posted on 12/20/14 at 2:59 pm to Galactic Inquisitor
So I'll rephrase: unless Jrue plays for the Spurs or Carlisle, he's not going to be the second best player on a championship team.

as above, holiday is currently having a better year than Parker did last year, and at 24 his best years are certain to be ahead of him. I think we have the GM to make riches from rags but certainly not the coach, which has nothing to do with jrue
again, championship caliber, not champion. There is only one champion and no matter what happens it is unlikely that you or I will dance in the SKC watching Davis and holiday and whoever else hold up the o'brien
holiday can be 2nd banana to Davis on a WC finals caliber team. To me that's as "championship" as it gets.
shite the saints got so gotdam lucky on their way to the ring it's nearly unfathomable...had they not won it they still would have been in the mix and that's all there is. Just get there

Luck plays a much, much larger factor in the NFL than it does in the NBA.
Why do NFL/NBA comparisons keep coming up?

In a world that George Karl gives him some mojo and turns him into The Glove 2.0. He just needs more swag.

i don't get why it would be a "bad thing" for Jrue to be the second best player on the team with the way he's playing. dude has been great this season. he's 10th among PG starters in PER and VORP, 7th in asst-TO ratio in the whole league, playing great defense, etc. he's been extremely efficient this year. would it be better if AD had another "superstar" type player around him to win a ship? sure. but having Jrue as his number 2 with the right supporting cast i think he can do it. especially if dirk did it.

Carlisle was the second superstar for the Mavs.
