I don't know how the hell it happened, but the presidency has been transformed from an office that should be held by a qualified, capable leader, to an office that should be held by a figure that symbolizes the "social progress" of a nation. It's why things like "first woman president", or "first black president" are important to people.

Could be a potentially dangerous trend. The office of the presidency was never set up to be held by a figure whose very holding of the office is considered unprecedented. The office of the presidency was set up to be held by a competent leader who adheres to the guidelines of Article II of the constitution.

The reason I am saying this is because there will be millions upon millions of woman voting for Hillary solely because she is a woman, without even looking at her stances. For these voters, what matters is that the presidency is a symbol of social progress, not competence, moral decency, and prudent rule.

This might happen twice, counting Obama.

Do you watch the nightly news? Social issues dominate. Gender and race issues dominate. At some point the populace begins to accept that our national fate hangs in the balance over these issues.

Agreed. Without mentioning the current President by name, and it's certainly not exclusive to him,but the Office has been "Celebritized"-half politics, half People Magazine. It's just where a feminized society naturally drifts over time, Imho. That's how chicks roll. You leave the house and the news is on, you come back and they are watching Real Housewives. It never fails.

Edit-Watch Good Morning America some time. I knew it was bad. I had NO IDEA it was THAT bad.

I think the term "qualified" is a very loose concept.

Would you not consider her "qualified"? Without looking at her stances and whether you agree.

What's funny is the progress can only come from a candidate on the left. A first black or woman president can't come from the GOP or else they are eviscerated by the media and Libs. Look at Palin or guys like Ben Carson considering running. The true colors of the left show that it isn't progress they want, but rather using race/gender to garner votes from those who feel victimized die to their race or gender, in order to win elections and further a leftist agenda.they can't win on pure leftist ideals without lying and making up faux social issues

True progress would be naturally electing a person based on his/her qualifications and policy and not looking at gender or skin color as reasons to vote for or against.

The republic is in decline. It's just that simple. We're Rome, essentially. The setting changes, but human nature never does.

JFK was probably the beginning. Reagan was the first "celebrity" president. GWB was the guy "you'd like to have a beer with".

None of this is new.

1) We choose candidates for president in popularity contests instead of by convention delegates who care about their party and by " smoke filled rooms."

2) We've gone overboard in finding ways for people to register to vote. The quality of voter and quality of nominees hs declined.
