JH is a good coach but may not be a great one. a guy lost superbowl and multiple nfc champ games, may not be a great one. so the jury is still on him. this may be his peak in his career. that is 49er does not want to pay him.
so stay in nfl is nice. but for the next a few years, he may need to changes jobs 3 times before he is done coaching.
saban is smart to know this and he quit nfl and now is the king in college balls.
Sounds to me like you are saying that the Jury is still out on a guy that has done better than the guy in the next paragraph (saban), via NFL results. I got very confused with what you are saying here.

I love recruiting. I do it a little for my work here and it is fun trying to get the good canidates off a college campus to come to your place of work.

Can you quit posting endless laugh emoticons and use words to explain why you think Michigan would be willing to throw $7-$10 million a year at Harbaugh? How is that even remotely believable?
Posted on 12/15/14 at 2:23 pm to TreyAnastasio
Trey, I am going to have to ask you to move along unless you want to add value to the board...thank you.

1. Do the 49ers have to wait until the end of the regular season to begin trade negotiations with another team?
The 49ers don't have to wait to negotiate a trade with Oakland, since their coaching spot is open. They would have to wait for other jobs to open before expanding those negotiations.

2. If Harbaugh quit before either of the 49ers' last two games to take the Michigan job, would he forgo part of his salary?
Yes, and if he quits at the end of the season he owes SF the remaining year.

Think about what you are saying. You think Michigan will spend $10M/yr on this hire? 3M more than Saban?

If they tried to trade him his agent would probably be allowed to try to negotiate an extension, raise and more control with the other team. This would increase SF's bargaining power.
If there is a trade (I don't think there will be) it will be because all of the other stuff is already in place...and the trade is just a mechanism to make everything happen.
Harbaugh is going to choose his next team (this is obvious). Time is a factor from both Harbaugh's standpoint and San Francisco's standpoint (more so Harbaugh). Harbaugh wants to be fired. The 49ers want him to resign or at least accept a trade. Neither wants to make it easy on the other.
Personally, I think there is a better chance that Harbaugh doesn't coach next year than it is he coaches in Michigan. Due to the timing, it makes more sense for him to wait for the 49ers to fire him (even if it means passing on some opportunities this year) with the knowledge that he'll get a paycheck, and be positioned for better opportunities next year.

I agree with all of that. He'll veto traded until they fire him. He has a lot of control here.
Nah. The 49ers are the ones in control. He is under contract with them. If he vetoes a trade, the 49ers can just threaten to wait to fire him until the Michigan job is filled. Michigan can't wait forever.

Part of me hopes they hold out for Harbaugh as long as possible and end up having to hire a gem like Charlie Weis.

I don't think his NFL contract restricts him from taking a college gig. The 9ers don't have much power, they're wanting a high pick for a guy they've pretty much said they want to fire.

Both sides have leverage in this. Harbaugh will get another NFL offer, and that isn't in any way in question. People thinking that the 49ers will just hold him hostage, they would be in breech of contract if they tried to starting hiring a replacement with him on staff.
It's a very convoluted mess. It will work out somehow, but I think Harbaugh likely stays in the NFL. Hell, the Atlanta job may open up in 2 weeks and that is scary as hell if Harbaugh went there.

What if Harbaugh to Michigan is being floated with the NFL timeline you listed to provide cover for Miles to get past the bowl game.

Chicken, why do you spend more time on the Coaching Changes board than the other boards? You occasionally show up on the other boards but when this board is live you pull up a chair and stay a while.
