re: Why does the NFL refuse to place a camera facing directly down the goal line

The fact that the NFL still uses two old men with a fricking chain to decide their first downs tells you all you need to know about the league.

Pilon cameras in pro and college would be a huge upgrade
They would show nothing. They would obstructed on nearly every 4th and 6 inch play.
They need overhead cameras and a straight down the line shot on both sides.
The overhead shot is very problematic.

You know with all that money they could just fid two cameras on each side of the goal line about 10 yards back from the pylon.
Like what the guy said about chain guys deciding 4th and inches or first down by inches. Maybe they just want to leave the refs something to do.

Goal line tech has been awesome in soccer.

it would seem to very easy to have a device on he bottom of the sticks that could shoot out a beam of light from the base to show the first down mark
hell if it was so lowered enough you could keep in on the whole time
(think of level lasers)

Someone explain this to me, every replay has to be from different awkward angles that never make it easy to tell if a ball crosses the plane
I am sure there is technology out there that could even eliminate the need for cameras.
All they would need is some kind of sensor/grid system where the ball is constantly in contact with the grid (the field) thus you can pinpoint precisely where the ball is at all times. Would allow for more accurate spotting in close situations as well as on the goal line.

I don't think we need to be relying on a computer system to tell us where the ball goes. GTFO with that.
Too many bugs, too many flaws in computers. If it goes down that's just more time to a game that most think is too long already. Every time they toss in a new ball they would have to stop and make sure the computer registered which ball was on the field.
This isn't fricking rocket science, it's football.

Anything is better than refs making judgment decisions which can decide a game.
They are basically already doing what I am asking with the foot tracker thing they have come out with tracks how many yards players actually run. And in tennis with the line judges using the ball app. Hell baseball does it with the pitch tracker. Everyone is already using the tech except football.
There is no reason they can't do that with the ball.
Simply put, there is to much $$$ riding on the NFL for them to let refs decide crucial decisions in games. Especially when everyone agrees the refs are terrible for the most part. Hell Carey the ref coorespondent last night even blatantly disagreed with there spot on a TD.

This. It's the same tech used in tennis to decide in/out replays. All it takes is several camera angles and the system can show whether the ball crossed or not.

If soccer can do it, football has no excuse.

Pitch fx is amazing in baseball. It also consistently makes Joe West and Angel Hernandez look like dog shite.

That's such an inexact science for something so important. Short by an inch? Well, you know, maybe he actually made it but the chain guy was off.

What bothers me even more about this is that every time they bring it out for a measurement, I don't feel like it's completely parallel to the side of the field
