Nebraska should have kept Bo Pelini IMO.

If the Husker fans could've picked their coach...who would've they picked?

Riley can coach and recruit, not a bad hire in my opinion.
Pelini had to go, when you embarrass the university you have to go.

Don't get mad because you're wrong.

I was never crazy about Pelini from the get go. And when that tape of him came out I really didn't like him.

yeah they basically just hired kirk ferentz
Yeah, I'd say Kirk Ferentz lite.
At least Ferentz has some conference championships, BCS bowl appearances, an Orange Bowl win, and multiple top 10 finishes on his resume at Iowa. Though, admittedly, we're all getting pretty stale on him now and think it is time for a change in Iowa City.
So what does Nebraska do? Go and hire a less successful version of Kirk Ferentz. Way to go Nebby.

From what I can tell, they are looking a coach that is willing to committing to the pass. This hire will at best be a repeat of the Callahan years.

Mike Riley had 4 seasons with 9 or more wins in 14 years at Oregon State. Bo Pelini had 7 in 7 at Nebraska.
not an upgrade.

Glad to not be a Husker fan right now.

True, they pay more for losses than any other school

This.
Sometimes a poster (usually a really self confident one) says something on here that is 100% wrong. This is one of those times.

He's a really good coach but this was not the right hire for NU at all. Even if he turns the program around in 4 years, you are now dealing with a 65 year old coach getting ready to retire back in Oregon.

I see what you are saying, but from what I have been reading and listening to, is that they might be doing a coach in waiting type of deal with this and they are banking on that Riley will have success as a HC. Ive been hearing that Frost would be the guy to take over but I dont know what the heck to believe right now considering they pulled off this kind of a hire.

He turned down Bama 12 years ago. It's nowhere near turning down modern day Bama.

As a Nebraska fan, I love this hire. Was unsure when it first broke, but like many others, the more I read about him, the more I like.
Couple factors.
1) Comparing success at Oregon State to Nebraska is 100% apples and oranges. Nebraska is THE only program in this state. No more big brother Oregon to be overshadowed by.
2) Riley was making $1.5 at OSU. He'll absolutely get some kind of raise, but I highly doubt he's going to ask for $4 mil+. A non-money hungry coach means more money for assistants. Don't underestimate that. Ask Bret Bielema.
3) It's a complete culture change for the program. The team had adopted a "us against the world" mentality and it was toxic. Riley is also the complete opposite of Pelini in terms of personality. He's not going to flip out on the sidelines, and have more focus on a negative attitude than the actual game itself. He's going to win the media, not push it away like his predecessor did.
4) A million times better facilities and fan support.
5) More nationally known recruiting. No doubt that it's not easy to recruit to Nebraska and it never will be. But with more resources comes more opportunities.
6) it reopens our Texas pipeline. That cannot be understated.
7) Development. He's known as one of the best talent evaluators in the country, and also one of the best in terms of development. When there is no natural recruiting base in Nebraska, you have to develop those walk-ons, those low 2-3 star kids from the 500 mile radius. There wasn't a lot of development under Pelini.
Is it the home-run hire that fans wanted? No.
Are there questions? Absolutely.
But it's a safe hire. And could grow even better depending upon what he does with his staff (Coach O?)
There were questions with every other candidate that was rumored.
In the end, I love it and I'm excited for the future.
