yes please

1. You would play the two teams in your hub five times each. These hubs are denoted by the vertical lines in the map above. Most are extremely tight geographically, with a couple unavoidable exceptions. This is 10 games.
2. You would play the other three teams in your region four times each. This is 12 games, for a running total of 22.
3. You would play teams from two other regions three times each. This is 36 games, for a running total of 58.
4. You would play teams from the remaining two regions twice each. This is 24 games, for a running total of 82.

I REALLY like this. This would be a breath of fresh air for the NBA. Real rivalries could be made.

I'll take it.
Keep divisions, end the conferences, has always seemed like the easiest way to go, imo.
It really is crazy how totally different the playing field is based only on where the teams happen to play. The nba decided we should play in the west and it absolutely changes the quality of basketball we have to put on the court to compete. Eastern conference front offices can put mediocre products on the floor and get celebrated for it(Atlanta). Meanwhile, I get to read about how great the Wizards have been this year when they've only played 3 decent teams all season, and lost all 3 games.
The Pelicans were 22 games under .500 vs the west last year and 8 games ABOVE .500 vs the east. Thats a joke.
If all 30 teams are playing for the same trophy, there shouldn't be totally different standards for how they compete for it.

Does this genius idea have any legs?
Posted on 11/26/14 at 4:39 pm to quail man
So my theory with this:
1 - first round bye
2-5 - division leaders
6-15 - based on record
2 vs 15
3 vs 14
4 vs 13
5 vs 12
6 vs 11
7 vs 10
8 vs 9
you'd have to do a 5-7-7-7 system though.

just 1-16. 1 v. 16, etc etc. Top 5 are the division winners and the rest based on record.

I just don't like the fact that 16/30 teams go into the playoffs. I've always felt like halfway is the point you want to stop at.
But yes, that would work too.

You can't have a top team on a bye waiting a week or 2.

I don't understand the purpose of this or why it is necessary. This is like the Pacers or Cavs bitching for years that they couldn't get past the Bulls. It sucks that the Pelicans play in a tough conference. But it shouldn't be that hard to be a top 8 team out of 15 with one of the NBA's best players. Trying to re-do the system now just seems sad and desperate..

+1
Under the realignment PHXs opponents winning pecentage would've been .521. Know the last time ANY NBA team played a schedule that tough? Me either, I went all the way back to the 02-03 season and didn't find one.
How about you finish in the top 8 if you want to be in the playoffs and not try to reorganize in a way that will hurt MORE teams that the alignment now.

The proposal didn't come from Pelicans' fans, did it? I think the current structure is silly regardless of where the Pelicans may be.

quote:So do away with the divisions or "groupings" as well. They're just there for travel considerations. Point is to get the best 16 in, which seems like common sense. Instead they arbitrarily decide Memphis is in the "west." Because a long in-conference road trip to California makes more sense than that hour flight to Atlanta or Charlotte.

The 16 playoff teams still wouldn't necessarily be the best 16. There would be more variance in the SOS than there is now. The bigger the difference in SOS the bigger the chance that one of the best teams doesn't get in because of their schedule.
Minnesota would've had 5 games with Milwaukee instead of 2. And 4 with the pistons and cavs instead of 2. Phoenix would've played the toughest schedule in the NBA in at least 10 years. Maybe Minnesota would've ended up with a better record than Phoenix after all of that. Was Minnesota better than Phoenix last year? That's just one example.

quote:How do you figure? Western teams play 52 games vs the west now. If you level the schedules out as much as possible, there definitely wouldn't be any teams close to a 52-30 split

Fwiw, Mark Cuban's plan:
quote:I think a total realignment like in the OP has a better chance of happening than getting eastern teams to agree to switch conferences.
In Cuban's plan, the Mavs, San Antonio Spurs, Houston Rockets and New Orleans Pelicans would move to the Eastern Conference. The Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons and Milwaukee Bucks would move to the West.

quote:These are specific examples of "problems" that will even out over time. Under Ziller's plan you rotate division opponents every year like the NFL. The AFC North is fortunate enough to play the NFC South this year.

Why is this such a priority now? This situation happens in almost every sport. You don't just throw away over 60 years of history and a system that makes the most sense to try to create or manufacture competitive balance. Sometimes it works in your favor, sometimes it don't. I'm sure the 4-5 NFC teams that finish with better records than the Saints or Falcons will think it is bullshite too, when they get left out of the playoffs. But the NFL isn't going to realign the divisions because of it.

The NBA has realigned many times. Nobody's throwing away any history.
