Damn I hate this! On way to stand this morning I talked to Hunt jr and his bud (both 18) about target awareness and other safety stuff they have heard countless times. Never hurts to remind self and others.

Stay safe brothers!

Well that's just asinine. It was a tragic accident.

Imagine if it were your brother or father who accidently killed someone while hunting. Would you want them charged and put in prison? Serious question.

Identify your target before you shoot and always wear orange!!!

I know two people who have been killed in hunting accidents; both were killed by relatives.

No. It was negligence and stupidity. Kid should be prosecuted.

I knew a guy whose dad shot at him with a .308 if I remember correctly. Only thing that saved him was the bullet hit the gun he was carrying! He was walking to meet his dad at the stand. Said he had to scream as he could hear the dad loading another round. Only injury was some shrapnel taken in the hand.

Tragic loss that should have, and easily could have, been avoided.

I'm on private land with just family, but we always text or radio before we start walking. I even wear a neon green headlamp at night so you can see me coming from a long ways off.

Sure, it was definitely negligence and stupidity that lead to an accident.

What does society gain by prosecuting this kid who accidently shot and killed his cousin?

It makes no sense. You have to identify what youre shooting so that you can actually locate the vitals and put a round through the kill zone. Are there really that many idiots out there that just point and shoot at something moving. Every intent should be to treat the animal with respect and put it down as quickly as possible. I dont understand how something like this happens.

The safety of other hunters from this irresponsible "hunter" from here on out.

I think you should always walk with a flashlight around dark. Should be a pretty easy distinction between what you shouldnt shoot at.

I honestly don't know. Perhaps you're right. Regardless, my thoughts and prayers go out to both families. I simply hate reading about senseless, preventable hunting death; reading stories like this ruins my day, particularly on a day when my 19 y.o. son is in the blind.

I think we can both agree on that

I get what you're saying...but i don't have kids yet so it's hard for me to say.

My hunting buddies are some of my best friends in the world. If I was accidently shot/killed by one of my friends while hunting, the last thing I'd want is to have them prosecuted.

I'm torn on prosecuting the cousin and sending him to prison because I think it accomplishes nothing. But at the same time, we are all accountable for our actions. There was obviously no malicious intent and him having to live with this for the rest of his life is probably worse than any prison-time you could give him.

I just baffles me to no end how you can look through your scope and not distinguish between deer and human. We've all shot plenty of deer at dusk and unless deer start walking upright, how can you NOT tell the difference?

This, and I shudder every time I hear somebody talk about making a "brush shot."

The investigation is complete? Can you link to where it has been ruled an accident?

How do you know there wasn't a motive? You don't until it plays out and even if it were an accident I think charges can and should be filed.
