I legitimately teared up reading your post. Stay strong bud.
I'm not a doctor so take what I say with a grain of salt, but it doesn't sound like classic ALS to me. Like you said, the muscle weakness could be from sitting around not using his muscles at all.

Sorry to hear that, Lost my dad to ALS and it is very misdiagnosed. Talk to the Neuro and see what they say, there is no objective test for ALS I hope its something else like residule effects from a stroke.

I hope for the best and will keep you and your family in my prayers. I'm sorry.

I hope not. I had a scare last August and September. Had every nerve test and blood test possible. Numbness started in my left foot and progressed really fast up my left leg to my right foot up the right leg. Started in my hands as well.
They couldn't find anything. Only explanation was stress.
I was freaked out for about a month. I sincerely hope your dad doesn't have it, it is the worst possible diagnosis.

Stay strong man. Most importantly, if in fact ALS, help your dad maintain his dignity. ALS is a terrible disease, it will take its toll on everything.

Any doctors who can tell me if those symptoms sound like ALS.
i had a buddy who had ALS. when they were examining him the dr. asked him to place his foot on the ground and then lift the front of his foot off the ground while leaving his heel down (flexion). he could not do it and the doc said ALS.

man, you and your dad are in my prayers tonight...
I have been in that situation before and waiting for an answer in that is just excruciating...honestly, you just have to force yourself to be kind of numb to it all just so that you can be there to support others in your family if you get bad news....

My wife's grandmother had ALS. Recently she had an aunt who was diagnosed as well. Doctors don't believe that it is the genetic form or they would have seen many more cases in their family, but I'm still concerned. I worry about it every time it comes up. I hope your father doesn't have it. It's a scary thought to see a loved one go through it.

Drs. thought my MIL had ALS. Turns out it was conplications from a medication that she was taking. Shes doing great now. Best of luck to your dad and your family.

I don't know much about ALS, but if he does have it, just know that it's not absolutely "the end of everything." Diseases act differently in different people.
My dad suffered a massive aortic dissection a few years ago when he was just 49 and I was just 24. Before I even drove to the hospital after hearing the initial diagnosis, I foolishly googled "aortic dissection survival rate" and saw that it was about 10%. I spent the rest of the day, week, month, year preparing for his death, and now, more than four years later and after a variety of resulting complications (liver failure, kidney failure), he's still operating just as we was before, and probably the best he's been since the multiple surgeries he had at the time (i.e. he works 40+ hours a week, pays for my sister's college, exercises, etc.).
He's not exactly like he was before, maybe 80%, but I'm thrilled I still have him. If your dad is diagnosed with ALS, and hopefully he's not, just be sure to treasure every moment with him. Don't mope, because it won't help either of you. Be strong for him and treasure every moment. Stay in the moment--It's the best for both you and him.
