re: Cemeteries, why do we have them?

Originally? Or just now? Originally it was because corpses smell really bad and no one wants to see grandpa's head being dragged off by a coyote while buzzards ate his entrails. Over time I think it kinda became the thing to do.

Because people die. Get over it.

Get yerself a plot in the cemetery. I don't want to be walking in stinking ashes when I'm enjoying a nice shade tree.

You must not understand the concepts of "buried" and "beneath".

Scruffy also thinks it would be cool to have a Viking burial. Put him on a boat and then light it on fire with fire arrows. Would be legit.
Not worried about it myself. As a wiseman once said "thanks to denial, I'm immortal"

Why buried? That is just a smaller version of a typical grave. I don't need buried objects under my trees. My plot is near a large oak with only a bench under the tree for hot tired people to rest should they need it.

That is pollution at it's worst. That would leave partially burned boats scattered on every shore. Terrible idea!

So the living can go and visit & mourn.

Dirt is under the grass. Yer stinkin ashes will be on top or stuck in a a urn (smaller version of a vault) under my otherwise nice tree .... and, yes, I'm trollin ya.

Agreed 100% I have asked this for years. Waste of space and money

I dunno. But I think that some people consider the sites of the the first "burials" they've found, with bodies being decorated with red ocher and such, to be significant. An indication of self awareness and abstract thinking or something like that.

I will tell my children to pay some shrimpers to just dump my body overboard

Love that Walter didn't buy an urn

Well, not for a few hundred years anyway.

If you go big like the Pharoes, you'll be remembered.

I don't like the idea of rotting in the ground. Therefore, I will elect to be cremated.

It doesn't make sense.
