they are replacing bad loads free of charge. LINK
URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT FROM HEVI-Shot
At temperatures below freezing, our 12-gauge, 3-inch HEVI-Metal® and HEVI-Steel® shotshell wads may crack on ignition. This may cause a “squib load”, with an off sound and reduced power.
While this squib load will not damage your gun in any way, it can result in a wad stuck in your barrel, because the force of some of these shells may not be strong enough to push the wad all the way out of the muzzle.
The danger comes if you fire again without clearing a stuck wad from your barrel. This can cause barrel damage or injury. If you hear an off sound with no power, please stop shooting! First, unload your gun – and then check your barrel for obstructions before you fire again!
Please do not shoot these shotshells. Instead, please contact us for replacement shells. We have fixed this problem in current production.
After we were contacted about squib loads, we began an intensive investigation that led to an understanding of the problem by the evening of 19 November. We want to get this notice out to our customers immediately. Please share it with your hunting friends.
The wads we bought between July and mid-November used a low-density polyethylene plastic. We switched yesterday to a linear low density polyethylene, which performs safely in all weather, including very cold weather. To understand the difference, please go to:
https://www.primepolymer.co.jp/english/technology/material/pe/05.html

So they are replacing all hevi shot?

You'd think that a company of that size would have the forethought to test their loads in the conditions under which they'd be used.
Glad they are trying to make things right and hope nobody has been hurt.

They will step forward now, especially with the manufacture initiating a recall - that's usually when you start to hear of all the "field" accidents..

It's not like EM to admit to problems and issue recalls. They have been criticized a lot by the turkey hunting community for changing load components. I suspect someone already had a pretty nasty "field" accident and EM's legal team is on the defensive.

Well shite, a buddy and I just bought 2 cases of heavy steel for Kansas

Had that happen with a Remington shell once in a duck blind. Wad was sticking out barrel 1/2". The fire shot out the receiver and burned the hair on my hand and the guy standing next to me. A large part of the report came out of the receiver, and we stood there for a second trying to figure out if either of us had actually been shot, since the entire blind lit up with fire in the early morning darkness. Ended up taking the gun apart to inspect everything, getting the wad out, and going on about our hunt. I did close that box of shells and shoot Kents the rest of the morning though.

This happened to my brother, too. A wet shell didn't fully clear the barrel and his second shot exploded out of the side of the barrel just forward of the forestock, which was 2 feet from my head. My ears rang for weeks and he's lucky he didnt lose his hand and I didn't get a face full of bbs. The hole was huge and peeled back.
Hevi Shot must be freaking out right now. It's hard to notice a defected shell being shot when it's your first of 2-3 shots on a flock of ducks, with all of the excitement going on.

Just called EM to start the return process. Went through almost a whole case of Hevi steel during teal season with no issues (hot weather) and shot thru 2 boxes of a case of Hevi metal so far for big duck with close to freezing temps but no problems with the shells. Still returning. Seems like an easy process. 1-2 weeks to get the new shells

I had a wad stuck in barrel on some federal red box duck loads....3/4 way to our limit, my buddy was pretty happy about the exxtra shooting but I now always carry a 3 piece cleaning rod in blind bag now. You only let stuff like that ruin one hunt and learn your lesson. It happened on the first shot of a salvo i fired, I'm glad i had the wherewithall to not fire again.

Wanted to update on my experience with the Hevimetal recall. I can't say enough good things about Environmetal's customer service. Shipping back to them was very easy and of course free. I shipped back a case of Hevi-metal minus 2 boxes of shells and 1 box of Hevi-steel. They returned to me a FULL case (10 boxes) of Hevi-metal and 1 box of steel. So gave 2 free boxes for the trouble i guess.
This kind of service will keep me as a customer and wanted to give my recommendation for Hevi-metal. I'm not gonna say i kill the most in my blind, but i kill the most ducks in my blind

Are the problem batches only from this year? I still have some left from last year but don't have the boxes to check numbers.

A lesser person who has shot a lot lately would find all of his empty boxes and fill them all halfway with what's left and try to return them. A lesser man....

Will they replace a beretta barrel?
