Had one with 75% travel before I got married. No way I could do it with a wife. Now that I have a kid on the way it is completely out of the question. Most I would do is 25% and it would have to be an extraordinary opportunity or a last resort.

i don't have kids but I used to have a job that travel was 50-75%. It was really hard on my wife, and our relationship.

I walked from a cake walk gig making a great living because of this. It sucks being gone every week, living in hotels and airports. It has perks, and it is fun, but it takes a toll.

I'll do it again, and likely soon, but it is not something I could do repeatedly, year after year.

I travel about half the time. Took a little getting used to, but my wife is a trooper and has never complained. The trade off for me is that I office from home when not traveling, so I make up for the things I miss in being able to make things a lot of Dad's can't. Also have tons of freedom in my job. It's also nice to get to experience a lot of great cities, and rack up on travel points that have afforded my family some nice vacations.

Married. No kids. On the road about 40-50% of the time. Can be hard but we plan things out and I can almost always set my travel schedule. So if I need to be in town for something I can. I'm also only gone for 2 nights at a time, maximum.

I think 2 days a week wouldn't be terrible but 3 a week might become too mich.

Family man here; and I travel roughly 2 to 3 nights a week. It's really tough being away from the kids, especially. I really struggle with making a change though, because I love the job. Its tough.

I have a job with 50%+ travel and I love it.

My family and 2 kids don't mind as I get back Friday's and travel out on Monday's so I'm with them on the weekends. Also, I get to take them places during the summer time so they are with me as I'm traveling.

The amount of miles I have pay's for their trips most times.

We sat down with our 6 year old and our 10 year old and had a long chat about daddy's travel.

The time I do have with them I turn off my phone, do not watch tv(unless they want to watch with me) and just hang out with them. We plan camping trips, etc. for the weekends.

My company is pretty good about committing to not bothering folks on the weekends as they consider it personal time.

The good thing is that our company pretty much shuts down middle of november until the end of the year so travel is pretty much limited. We get an entire week of Christmas off, fully paid by the company.

I also make that OT cash so that helps a lot because I can afford to put my kids in the things they want, like music lessons, sports, etc. that are all costly.

My dad travelled a lot for work when we were kids. We never really thought much of it. He missed a lot of our ball games and such, but always made it home for special events. Besides, we were more likely to get pizza and McDonalds when dad was out of town. He provided a good life for us and put me through college and for that I will always be grateful.

Now that I'm older, im not sure how my mom didn't have a mental breakdown being home alone with 3 kids for weeks at a time. I can't imagine how hard it was on her.

I do. I travel usually 3 days a week, all over the country.

It may be different for me, as I'm able to dictate what days I travel, so I can plan around family activities.

I still coach kids sports, and make most practices and all games for the ones I don't coach.

Just make sure you don't come home and see too many dirty dishes in the sink.

Checking in, with a little more than fifty percent away from the family.

Con, the work sucks.

Pro, the family also sucks.

So it's a push really.

Yes more than likely sales. I did it maybe 75%for a long time and i grew to hate it. Eating by yourself at night at the bar then heading to the hotel to do more work. Not to mention the freaking airports and constant driving. IMO it does put a strain on a marriage. I travel at most maybe 5 days overnight a month. That's enough. I enjoy being around my children and I know how hard it is on the mrs.

I currently travel about 100k miles per year for my job and my wife is currently pregnant with our first child. The traveling takes a toll on both your health as well as your family life. If i'm gone Tuesday-Friday, I can promise you that for Friday night and most of Saturday I am exhausted and trying to catch up. Then get ready for another trip on either Monday or Tuesday with the same outcome. Being on the road that much leads to bad eating habits, lack of exercise and lots of beat off sessions. There is a lot of burden on my wife because she doesn't cook too much so while i'm gone, she's eating out or not eating at all which isn't good for the little one. When i'm home I can at least help put some veggies into her diet and give her the nutrients that she needs.

My God you just described me in a past life. I'm much happier now even with less pay being able to be home almost every night.

Mostly national travel with some international? How does it impact your family life? what are the pros/cons of taking something like this assuming the pay is more than sufficient?

It takes a terrible toll on your family life and accrues over time. Don't get me wrong, you will be reminded constantly how much you love your family as separation will do that.

And keep in mind you have the easy part - the wife who has to maintain the fort with you gone is the hard part IMO. Start missing birthdays, anniversaries, kids plays and shite. My 5 year old (at the time) balling "please don't leave again Daddy" upon seeing the suitcase pretty much killed me.

It is not a long term solution by any means. So in my mind it has to be a very very high pay premium to go through it.

Disclosure: I travel currently about 25-30% a year but have some control, spent several years in the 50%+ category.
