I fish bait casters so I'm not too up to date on the spinning reels. I know shimano are good, but if you had that budget what would you go with? Shimano, fluger, diawa etc...It's for a gift.

Shimano Symetre and a $100 rod. I like St Croix and the BPS Xtreme rods.

Which ever Shimano reel is around 100-120, in the 2500 size and a falcon coastal rod

get your rod at academy. regardless of brand. can walk in and exchange as long as you have receipt even if you just smashed it in a car door or something.

Shimano is middle of the mall BS now. My dad recently bought a Penn and it's much smoother and can cast much further.

My Penn Battle 3000 is my go-to.

I used to use nothing but Symetre 1500 spinning reels, moved to baitcasters. I still have the spinners for guests, they held up but needed work due to the abuse I put them thru. Something similar on a 7" Falcon Original and you can bring in most fish you'll hook. Know nothing about fresh, so dragging a bass thru lilies with 900# test is Greek to me.

I assume you are fishing saltwater. Penn 4500/ I have three. They are very reliable and super easy to maintain. They can handle any speck or red you catch inshore. I combine this with a Castaway medium action rod. This combo is probably less than 200 bucks and will get the job done.

2 weeks ago I bought a 7'3" Duckett Ghost rod for $100 at Academy, it's super light and has a fast action tip with micro guides that are supposed to help with casting and line twisting, I paired it with a Penn Battle and took it out to Delacroix the next day and we caught our limit of specks and the rod and reel performed very well.
