I never would have guessed cricket players make that much cash. Shoot, I would have thought the highest paid athletes would be pro soccer players, because the best in the world can play league and international TV contracts off each other.

Local tv baseball ratings and contracts are much higher than most people realize, especially in the top 7 or 8 markets.

There's too many of them.

MLB and NBA have smaller rosters.

MLB revenue in 2013 was $8.5 billion, they expect revenue for this season to be over $9 billion.

By comparison-
NHL- $3.7 billion
NBA- $5 billion
NFL- $9.5 billion

Plenty of answers but baseball has the only players union worth a shite in North American professional sports.

Seems like these two post go together. I understand NFL roosters are larger but I think the NFLPA needs to take some advice from the Baseball union during the next CBA negotiations

Also, why didn't I play cricket

I have no skin in the game, but it would be nice to see NFL players get gauranteed contracts

Baseball pays it's players ridiculous amounts with longer contracts.

Baseball has moved away from the high priced long term guaranteed contracts. Too many clubs got burned when the super star they got from free agency came up with a career ending injury in the first year of a 10 year deal.

don't watch baseball so I'm not knowledgeable of the business side but don't some CFB/NFL games regularly draw more viewers than baseball?

No. Baseball games DESTROY NFL games as far as viewers.

Ummm did you miss the thread about on the first page of the MSB today where a MLB player is getting a 10 year 300 million dollar contract?

Curt Flood's challenge which led to free agency and the antitrust exemption for MLB.

They haven't moved away, but teams are getting smarter about who to give them to and when to give them

Ummmm, do you know the difference between 'moving away' and 'no longer exists'? And the modern long term deals have clauses on how many games you play or play... particularly pitchers since they are much more prone to career ending injury than position players.

HELL NO! Absolutely not worth it for the teams. Do you see how quickly these guys get injured or fall off a cliff? A reason why an NFL team can quickly rebuild in a few years is the ability to shed albatross contracts. It doesn't work that way in the NBA and since your a G'town grad I'll use an easy example Wizards giving Gilbert $120M and how that just ruined the team for 8 years.

Did Clayton Kershaws deal have that? You say they are moving away from it but what evidence do you have of that? I just don't see it.

They're the least skilled of the 4 major sports. The vast majority of players that can play multiple sports at an elite professional level opt for the NBA/MLB over the NFL.

162 games in 182 days = HUGE TV CONTRACTS. They also make more $$$ than other sports on ticket sales, concessions, parking, etc... The "game day experience", due to there being 162 games. Last year the Cowboys led the NFL in attendance with 88,043 per game... x8 home games = 704,043 on the year. The Devil Rays were dead last in attendance last year in the MLB, with 17,857 per game.... x81 home games = 1,446,464 on the year. They were dead last in the MLB and its twice as much than the Cowboys who led the NFL. So that's twice as much ticket sales, concessions, etc. The Dodgers led the MLB with 3,782,337. That's a bunch of $$$.

And MLB has revenue sharing. Remember last year when the Astros traded away all their young prospects and were terrible? Still made right around $200m iirc. Every teams makes bank in baseball.

Some players are worth the big $$$, others aren't. However, the 10year contracts are outrageous in baseball. For a guy like Mike Trout, yes I get that and all. But he's the exception. Most of those guys are in their late 20s and getting 10 year deals...
