It's a fact of life but isn't an investment in your future like a house is. It's throwing money away for shelter when it could be going to an asset. So if given the option to not burn that money on rent, many take it to improve their financial footing.
I think owning your home as an investment is a farce unless you sell at a huge profit or will be a landlord with numerous rentals. You pay $450,000 over 30 years for a home that you bought for $200,000 and is probably worth $150,000.00.
Renting makes you no worse off.

Exactly. You are also not responsible when things break and you can easily move whenever you need to. You sacrifice having that asset in exchange for flexibility, reduced financial liability, no debt, and mobility.
These things may or may not make renting worth it depending on one's situation or life style.
Also, it is often much easier to find an affordable rental in the area of one's choice than it is to find a house one can afford. Plus, financing isn't always easy to come by.

Even if you assume those numbers that almost make your argument make sense, you have something worth zero dollars after making all of those payments instead of something worth 150k. Plus you can pay your mortgage back quicker and then don't have to may payments once you pay it back and everything you pay goes toward that day. Renting is just money out every month.

Uh huh. Just as good to spend those dollars to get an asset worth zero dollars as compared to paying around the same amount of dollars and getting out of it something worth more than zero dollars. C'mon dude. The upside to renting is not having to pay for maintenance and the downside is money spent for no asset of any value. You get some flexibility in living situation and movement too. It really depends on your point in life.

You do realize purchasing a home is nothing more than basically renting your abode for 30 years or more, while being responsible for everything that goes wrong, with the risk of still losing that asset if something happens to you where you cannot afford to pay for it anymore right? Then there are property taxes which means you and other home owners are the prime targets of every referendum to "improve society."
I do not intend to by a home if I cannot pay for a substantial portion of it, if not all of it, upfront.

It has been interesting to learn the age ranges of certain posters here.

Most renters don't understand that they pay for that too. That's why they stupidly vote for all of those "societal improvements".

That's another story all together. Home owners and the middle class get the shaft by everyone.

Yeah, a lot of people think that paying rent gets you out of property taxes when that can't be more inaccurate. Know how every time your lease is up and you rent goes up by a few bucks? Remember that millage that you voted in favor of and was passed on the recent elections? There's your answer. Hence why rent all over BR went up after the CATS elections.

Germany/Austria were the most educated and advanced countries un the world when they went all in with Hitler. Maybe the aristocracy thought they could use and then process old Adollf but the Germans of the 20s & 30s win this one going away.

Yea, luckily our generation doesn't support the practice of slavery via the draft.

I know plenty my age that work multiple jobs and can't pay rent due to the prices of apartments. It's not a generational thing it's an economic thing

So who is going to do your fighting for you when, not if, the time comes? Forty years since the last active draft and you're concerned about this?

Seems to be doing fine without being forced to fight

If you need to justify slavery then I'm sure you can start a thread on it. Luckily, younger people today aren't a big fan of it.
