I'm pretty confident that La. will be the first (or close to first) "Deep South" state to legalize.

Louisiana will be one of the last states to legalize. The state couldn't even pass a law this year to reduce some of the strictest possession penalties in the country.

You've got to think Virginia will be one of the first in the south to go legal. I think Florida has a good chance to go legal within the next 5-7 years too.

Look at Virginia's neighboring states--DC went legal recently and Maryland decriminalized possession up to 10grams this past year. Both DC and Maryland have medical marijuana already. Maryland is expected to go legal by 2016.

The 1st step is passing medical marijuana and Florida came close earlier this week.

Maybe kentucky

They barely passed growing hemp here recently and that's because of the OMG religious based outrage of something that simply looks like marijuana.

Basically the state has the opportunity to legalize a plant that can replace lost tobacco production and naturally it'll piss down it's leg and be the last one.

NOLA has practically not given a frick. Rest of the state.. good fricking luck. Morality police and placing people in jail are a huge industry. That isn't going away anytime soon.

It will continue to spread state by state but...

Once it becomes a major campaign issue used to turn out vote, it will become more likely to go nationwide.

DC was a huge one to fall.

Florida didn't pass, but it did receive 58% approval and needed 60%.

That means the majority of people in Fla who voted wanted it, and it barely missed the high threshold.

Keep in mind the FLa vote received 58% during a mid-term election where old people and very conservative voters are much more likely to dominate the vote even more than usual.

Last note: Rumor is RJ Reynolds and the Altria Group (the largest tobacco companies) are ready to alter production to Marijuana over night once possible.

Unless they can grow some ridankulous for like $3 a gram they're going to be shite out of luck compared to established growing markets.

Pretty sure big Tobacco has the ability (resources, capital, infrastructure, labor, etc.) to bury any competition with economies of scale that are nearly impossible to compete with.

In the future it will be like having a choice between Miller Lite or a craft beer.

There will be a market for both, as long as the small batch stuff is worth the trouble producing, for the smaller amount they will make.
