salary negotiations

I just received offer for an engineering role with a large oil and gas company. Initially it looks pretty decent on the surface, but I will read more into it tonight. My question is, if I feel I could do better how do I go about countering or negotiating a better deal without screwing anything up? What have some of you done in the past?

Entry level or what?
If it's a competitive position you might not be able to do much

you arent going to screw it up, they won't rescind the offer if you ask for more. if you a premium at the position then say I was hoping for this number. if you are entry level, be glad you have a job in a oil and gas or ask for a signing bonus

i'd provide some kind of case... reiterate why you're their guy, and why their offer is low, reemphasize your desire and explain how your skillset will help them reach their goals... if they have some room, they'll probably throw you a bone, if it's reasonable..
don't forget that things like vacation can be negotiated too if they can't move on salary..
i hire a few folks a month and will move some when it makes sense..

It is good that you received a number. Although it is decent there is most likely some stretch in the offer. The company could have given you a loaded question such as "What salary do you expect?"
Learn about the benefits and be willing to trade if the salary is your priority.

5 Years experience.
Its pretty solid compared to my current salary (+18% and signing bonus), but I don't want to leave anything on the table. Benefits are comparable to my current company. The only downside that I see so far is that I am about to earn a 3rd week of vacation and I would be going back to two.

I was literally in the same exact position as you recently. I have the same amount of experience as you and was offered an 18% raise and signing bonus.
I tried negotiating directly with the owner of the firm for a higher salary and he said that what he offered was the best that he could do. The position was highly competitive and they could have easily chosen another person with more experience than me so I accepted it.
If the whole compensation package looks good to you and it is with a reputable company, its a no brainer man... you should take it.

Ask new company for 3 weeks
I doubt they balk at that request

especially since you already have the service time.

May I ask which?
I recently jumped from one to the other. Some are more willing to negotiate than others. There's likely some play in the numbers, but it's based on a formula with only minor adjustments. It depends on which grade/class/level they offer vs your experience.
Vacation is probably nonnegotiable, but you can certainly get credit for service and not lose the 3rd week (assuming new has same vacation schedule).

Offer is from Shell.
I'm going to try and get another week of vacation. I was really looking forward to that 3rd week.

Do I know you?
You can definitely get credit for that service. Even if you don't make full 5 years and get 3rd week, you'll get credit for the 4.x and get your 3rd week from Shell when you do. It'll be prorated first year.
Biggest negotiating piece will come from Gr 4 or Gr 5. If you were offered a Gr 5, then you should be close to topped out in that grade. If Gr 4, then they are likely stretching for you, more room to play, but less qualified to do so.
I made the dumb mistake in my negotiating and gave them a number, they matched, so I had no where to go. I made a thread about it here.

I was forced to give a number in the online application. They gave a little extra in the offer though. So I probably won't get much salary wise.
How will I know if I'm Gr 4 or Gr 5?

They should tell you your grade, it's not a secret. If your annual bonus target is 10%, it's grade 5, 15%, grade 4. Similar to classification levels or engineer levels depending on where you're coming from.
I have a number in the online application as well. They called and said it was too high, so I revised down a bit. They matched new number on offer (I had a Gr4 and Gr5 offer, they matched on Gr4).
Are you getting a signing bonus? I did not, but considered using that as my leverage for additional negotiation power since I lost my position on salary. TD convinced me not to and take it and run. However, you will get 0% match on your 401k and a pro-rated annual bonus your first year.

I am a Gr 5 then. They did offer a signing bonus. I am starting to feel like I asked for too little salary wise.
I know about the 0% 401k for the first year, but the 401k match is nice after 10 years.

If they beat what you asked for in the application, and gave you a signing bonus, I'm not sure what position you have for further negotiation. It sounds like a good offer. I assume you simply don't want to leave anything on the table.
I mention the 401k and bonus as negotiating points. If they beat salary request and signing bonus, I'm confident they'll give you credit for vacation years of service. Only thing left is benefits. You mention they are similar, but I assume slightly reduced at first. It's the only card you have left to play IMO. Taking full compensation package into account, the salary you requested may have been low.
It's up to you at this point. The advice this very same board gave me was to not come off as greedy and accept the [better than] requested offer. If it's a good offer, you like the position, and want to jump ship, it sounds like you should take it.
