When did LSU first add the eye of the tiger to Midfield? What was there before? Nothing? I know the endzones used to be checkerboard
Edit:
Upon further research, I found some cool pics

IIRC, that was added during Saban's tenure. It was "LSU" in block letters before that.

I liked the old block letters.

It used to be on midfield in the late 80s. Gerry Dinardo claimed that the "eye" was only a regional distinction, and he wanted bold "LSU" at midfield as it would create a national brand when on television.
But you are probably right that it showed back up after Dinardo left and Saban arrived.
Edit: Sev has corrected me, early 90s was when the "eye" first arrived.

Here's a good article on the topic: LINK

It wasn’t until the early ’90s that the Tiger Eye was suggested, Fasbender said. It was a big hit with LSU fans.
When Gerry DiNardo was named head coach in 1995, he scrapped the Tiger Eye in favor of an “LSU” in the middle of the field. When Nick Saban took over in 1999, he brought back the iconic Eye.

The end zones looked much sweeter then too.

Reason 3,090,895,195 that Nick Saban >> Gerry DiNardo

I hope it stays forever.

think it started in stovall's era (early 80's)
eta: I think I'm wrong. definitely at least mid-late 80's though

This is wrong.

according to some pre-game show I watched Saturday afternoon, the tiger eye didn't show up on the midfield until 2009. I do not know if that is correct but the segment did an interview with the artist that does it for every game. He does it freehand, no stencils. Pretty cool segment and interesting story. I believe it was on CST. They also had commentary with Jacob Hester and other past players. Hawthorn interviewed CLM too.

That is wrong too. I remember seeing it in the '80s.

The Eye was FIRST on the field back in the 80's. It was brought back more recently. It only appeared a couple of times back then. But its first appearance was in the 80's.

Does anyone have a pic of the eye in the 80s?

You are correct. I have a picture somewhere (think my parents have it) and I was standing in front of the eye (was mid-'80s at some point).

Those screen shots really show how shitty it was to watch games on tv. How times have changed.

Good find. This may be the game I have the picture from. I really don't remember which game it was.
Go to 27:09 on the video you linked and it's clear as day in 1985.

The eye definitely appeared in the 1980's and most people thought it was cheesy because of the tie-in with the song "Eye of the Tiger". If I remember correctly, it didn't last long and no one really missed it.
