It came about after the Rocky 3 movie in 1982. Apollo Creed told Rocky he needed to get the "eye of the tiger" in order to defeat Clubber Lane. The main song in he movie was Eye of the tiger from Survivor. Thought is was corny when they first used it, but like it now.

not there in '83, but you're obviously right on the derivation of 'eye of the tiger'

Is it just me, or is the eye smaller now? I noticed Saturday night that it's contained within both 45s. It seems like it used to stretch from 40 to 40.

I asked my Mom to drive me to New Generation so I could get it. They had it only as a single (yeah, vinyl) and I wore the shite out of that thing. I think it was WFMF that used to do Tiger Tracks(sp?) and they always mixed in Eye of the Tiger.
I don't remember the date it happened, but when we came out of the tunnel to go to our seats and I could see the field (that got me every time and still does to this day), I lost my shite because I thought it was so cool.

The movie was from 1982. The eye started sometime in 84 or 85, but it came about because of the movie.

I remember that it appeared in the early 80's when the song "eye of the tiger" came out. I believe that it was on the field for the 83 season to be exact and was replaced in '84. Probably due to change in coaches and the fact that '83 was such a bad year.

And now, it's the third-down tune/cheer from the GBFTL

I don't remember it ever being 20 yards long. They used to put it offset on the 45 instead of centered on the 50, maybe that's what you're thinking of.

Rocky III was in the early 80's, possibly 1982-83. Our band started playing Survivors "Eye of the Tiger", soon after that the eye appeared at midfield.

The eye was the standard setup during the Arnsparger, Hallman (except for 1993, when the centennial logo was used) Saban and Miles years. Under Arnsparger, the logo was off center, so that the eye was between the left 45 and the 50.
Under Archer, there was a Louisana state outline, so that they could remove any specific reference to LSU during the filming of "Everybody's All American" in 1987. After that, nothing was in the center of the field for the rest of Archer's tenure.
Dinardo's year had the block LSU as described earlier.
Before all of that, in the 70s, LSU used to have a checkerboard with purple and gold on one side and the visiting teams colors on the other. They also put the visiting team's initials in the South end zone using the font used during the Arnsparger/Hallman/Saban years. That used to be a pretty common thing, but nobody does it now.
