Do it and don't look back. While the mag and loaded issues 4lsu pointed out are valid, the smoothness and accuracy more the make up for it.
For the op though, if I already had a 30-06, I'd go with 7-08 to have something lighter.

I agree, I have 2 of them and love them, however I have always had detachable magazines , so it is what I am used to, are you saying you can not load one shell in the chamber without the magazine? I have never tried but that sounds odd, guess I will go play with it, my only gripe on the t3 is the safety, I much prefer the thumb safety on my ABolt , but otherwise the T3 wins in every category for me

Mind sharing...been looking into them myself.
The first is that you can't load it without the detachable magazine in it. This means you have to keep up with another component of the gun to operate it. A new magazine is $70 from Amazon.
You can't remove the live round from the chamber and insert it into the magazine while the magazine is attached due to the top rail of the gun. I can do this with my A-Bolt. This means you have to remove the magazine from the gun to unload it properly, which takes me back to my first complaint above.
Other than that, I love the gun. It shoots great and handles even better.
Seems kinda petty to me but its your rifle. I love my tikka and Sako and hey both have a mag. To me the mag is better then the 700's I have. I do however like the fact that I can push my round down into the gun and close the bolt empty but it's not a big enough deal to not buy another.
.308 out of those two for the op. OP what other calibers do you have because that may change my vote.

Have a 7mm-08. Love it. If you shoot in the brush get a 7mag. If its long shots 7mm-08 is great.
I'm confused. So your saying a 7mm-08 is better for long shots than a 7 mag?

The 700BDL with the hinged floor plate is the way to go, IMO. This allows you to simply open the floor plate to remove the rounds in the internal magazine, then shuck the live round out of the chamber. There's no detachable magazine to keep up with and you can always load, unload, and shoot the rifle when you have the rifle.
The T3 is a great gun. I love it and always find something to bitch about, so don't mind me.

Versatility they are miles apart. 7mm-08 is basically a low-recoil .308 that's better suited for lighter game at longer ranges. .308 will cover everything 7mm-08 will do, and more, at the expense of more recoil.
There aren't many common hunting cartridges that are more similar than the two. He's not exactly deciding between a .243 and a .300 magnum.

This, the .30-06 and the .308 are very close to each other. Unless you are looking at a gun with a shorter action (for lighter weight) and even then I'd go with the 7mm-08.
If the OP said he was looking at the .257 I'd give that one a close look as well. I the .257 wby and it's a wonderful, fast, flat shooting round.

I'll be breaking in a t3 hunter in .270 this season. Looking forward to it.

Except .308 has a lot more in terms available bullet weights. Can open up any reloading manual and see which one offers a lot more in terms of versatility. Like I stated, if you are recoil sensitive, prefer somewhat flatter shooting within a few hundred yards then sure but between the two .308 is a better choice overall.

There are plenty of options in .284 as well.

You are shooting white tail in brush with a 7Mag!!?

My thoughts exactly. 30-30 or .45-70 are better suited as brush guns in my experience.

There is no such thing as a "brush gun", unless you mean a compact gun that is easy to carry through thick stuff.

quote:When I bought my 10 year old son his first deer rifle, my final two were the 7-08 and 308. I ended up w/ the 308 as I already had all the components and dies to reload for it. Now that I have a 7-08, I'd have a hard time choosing between the two were I to make the decision again. Yes, the 308 has more bullet weights and loads to choose from, but how many different bullets and loads does one need? OTOH, ammo availability can be a problem w/ the 7-08. The only local store that carries ammo is Walmart and it doesn't even stock 7-08 ammo; it usually has some sort of 308 ammo available. The 7-08 is a great deer hunting gun using 120-140 grain loads. The 308 does same thing, mainly w/ 150 grain loads. The 308 will recoil slightly more.
More for a family type hunting rifle.

I shoot an 06 but want something different

I was also thinking maybe 257
Which one, 257 Roberts or 257 Weatherby Magnum? There's a BIG difference between the two.

Guess there will always be people here to argue with whatever choice you make like they are the final word in hunting or fishing.
You hunt and fish with what makes you happy and are comfortable with... period
Confidence plays a big part in both...

I did once. I got lucky on placement I was walking to the stand and one popped out 25 yards away. Exit wound was almost exactly the same size as the entry. I think I got the heart IIRC, only ran 30 yards.

Which would you get or are they pretty close to the same?
7mm-08 is a 308 case necked down to 7mm. 7mm bullets have about the best ballistic coef. You will find much more ammunition variety with the 308 because of it being around for so long and military/paramilitary use.
7mm-08 is a better round because it is the same case with a better BC bullet.
