I am about to move out of my townhouse and I am getting rid of as much as I can. I just put some stuff by the street (a chair, DVD/VHS player, computer printer) and was gonna put it in the dumpster if nobody came and got it. Lo and behold, 30 seconds after I put it by the street, a young man and his "momma" were picking it up. I was carrying the behemoth of a printer and said "Do you want this too?" He said "Momma, you want a printer?" All I could think, does this woman make her grown son drive her around all day looking for stuff? I don't live on a through street.
I remember when I was young, I lived in a house in NBR that was built in the 30's/40's and had this lavendar tub. When we remodeled we took the tub out. The thing mustsa weighed 1,000 pounds and it was gone by nightfall.

That's the only bad thing about living in the sticks... nobody to pick up my trash.

I've got an old broken down washing machine I need to get rid of... can I put it in front of your house?

When I lived on Perkins Rd. we'd make bets on how long something would last on the curb.

People picked up some pretty gross stuff.

any old piece of furniture, rug, etc that I put on the curb never makes it till the next morning

an old black guy drives through my neighborhood every Sunday night with a trailer picking up all the old stuff

When I lived in Houston, I would just put one thing by the curb, then I would wait by it for like 5 minutes. When a Mexican stopped to pick it up, I would say hey, come look at this other stuff in my garage. That way they would haul the stuff for me.

People like that recycle or resell. I'm glad they are out there.

That is a great thing about Houston. No shortage of Mexicans to take stuff like that off your hands.

Last Friday I was STANDING by the curb waiting for my friend to pick me up to go fishing.

I had 3 fold up chairs laying on the ground near me, and my little duffel bag of clothes.

Someone stops and tries to pick up my brand new chairs, in their bags, with me STANDING right next to them. AND he happen to do this driving a BR Water truck. Damn.

When I moved back down to LA, I put an old mattress on the curb with a box spring and it rained that night... it was gone by lunchtime.

Didn't help that I was in Capitol Hill (close to one of the more dangerous neighborhoods)

You can find good shite on the side of the road. My buddy picked up a little stainless steel cart the other day. Looked like it had come out if a commercial kitchen.

I have found lots of good stuff people have thrown away. Found an IKEA Poang chair that was perfectly good....just bought a new cushion. Found an IKEA chest o' draws that just needed a draw re-glued. I put all my workout gear in it now. My neighbor has found bicycles in excellent condition....he just found a propane patio heater that was slightly dented but otherwise works great.

I put all of my old light fixtures and the boxes for the new ones out on the curb.

In the middle of the night all of the old fixtures were gone....and they stacked the boxes back up nice when they were done. I thought well that was nice of them
