Game 1 of the Giants/Royals World Series drew a 7.3 rating and 12.2 million viewers on FOX Tuesday night, according to Nielsen fast-nationals — down 15% in ratings and viewership from Cardinals/Red Sox Game 1 last year (8.6, 14.4M) and down 4% and a fraction of a percent, respectively, from Tigers/Giants Game 1 in 2012 (7.6, 12.2M).

@paulsen_smw: Giants/Royals Game 1 drew 7.3 rating, lowest for a World Series opener and 5th-lowest overall.

I saw Game 1 was 8.0 and was the lowest for a WS game or something like that.

I don't know. I did my part and watched.

Doesnt help when you have to search for the league championship series on TV. I love the Royals story but it doesnt resonate with enough people when they dont watch any of the games because they are on fox sports and not the network.

West Coast team with a 5pm local time start on a weekday playing a small-market team with no national following. Ratings don't surprise me at all.

Hating baseball must be the cool, edgy thing to do.

Meh.

I've watched most of the postseason games. They have been fantastic.

In fairness, tv ratings for just about everything other than the super bowl are down nationally since there are more options and more media to watch programs. Also, local ratings are way up for baseball markets.

Part of the problem from the Royals side of this is that other than Royals fans and pretty intense baseball fans in general, the Royals do not have one single marquee player. The casual fan or fringe fan couldn't tell you one player on the Royals team. And truthfully, other than Posey and MAYBE Panda and Bumgarner (MAYBE), the Giants aren't much different. And even those 3 guys aren't exactly huge baseball names.

The Royals are a cool story like the Pirates were last year, but nobody outside of MO is going to tune in for every one of their postseason games. And the Giants aren't a national team like the Red Sox, Yankees, Cardinals, Dodgers, etc..They are closer to that than the Royals but still, they are mainly a NoCal team.

Not surprised. No hype at all for it. You don't hear about it on ESPN because it's airing on a rival network. No one has even heard of FS1, so to the extent the games are played on that network, no one will tune in. Kansas City and San Francisco are not exactly the two most popular teams in the sport. And baseball is being idiotic by trying to compete with football at this time of year instead of shortening their season and playing the World Series at the end of Summer.

But what do I know?
