Job applications...do you choose to identify with a gender or ethnicity?

So lately it seems like every job application I encounter asks for my race and gender. The majority of them also give the option for you to decline to answer, which I immediately do without hesitation.
The way I see it, being a middle-class white male in this country already puts me at a disadvantage when it comes to finding work these days. Why should I choose to automatically disqualify myself by identifying with a gender or race that doesn't adhere to a company/department-imposed quota?
Does anyone else choose to not identify when asked such questions?

Hell yeah I identify myself. I also check Native American (1/16th) and scribble that I'm left-handed in the margin.
I might go gay if that add that shite to the form.

Transgender-queer Pacific Islander.

Well, my name pretty much answers the question of my gender.
I don't know if I'd answer race or not, but I also haven't filled out an application in a few years. My name is also pretty white, so it probably answers that question, too.

frick yes I identify. Do I need to be ashamed of my white maleness?

You must be doing something wrong, white male is the way to go.

I am a white male. So yes. I would identify myself.

I'm the real threat to minorities. I'm a White Hispanic, aka "Daywalker". I get invited to all of the office parties and I satisfy the diversity requirement.

I'm not angry as much as I am disappointed.
Shouldn't the best person for the job be hired on the basis of their resume and experience? Why should race or gender matter at all unless you are applying for an exclusively female organization (e.g. an all-female gym like Curves)?

I'm not in a position to dictate whom a company considers the best person for a particular job. I do know that if you were born white, reasonably well off, and American in this day and age, you kinda struck a bit of an historical jackpot. Just try to make the best of it.
