True...but it's reasonable to think that she would be acting very carefully (to the best of her ability). It would take extreme incompetence to put the blame on her.

I posted this earlier in the thread but it bears repeating:

I'm willing to cut a lot of slack on this front.

Saying that someone broke protocol for PPE in something like this doesn't mean the person was by default negligently careless.

Unless she was a nurse trained for usage in isolation wards, it's understandable how she could have fricked up.

Not excusing her mistake.

But employing the techniques required for this isn't just something you are told. It takes practice. And a touch of OCD probably can't hurt.

Your day to day mannerisms cannot be employed at all, and conscious thought must be maintained on your current task at all times. One momentary lapse when you are tired after working a double is all it takes with the level of PPE they were using, even of you were flawless the other times.

And you also have to consider the likeliest point of exposure was during PPE removal.

some question because I haven't really been following the story anywhere other than here.

Can an infected person transmit the disease before showing symptoms?

What is the projected mortality rate in a country like the US?

Seriously though, I'm guessing they are putting her name out so those that have close contact with her can come forward and get tested.

I believe it was one of her family members that came forward.

I have seen nothing to indicate an infectious individual being asymptomatic. The reason is how Ebola works. It attacks your immune system as one of its targets, and sends the immune system into over drive extremely early in the infection process.

In fact, you can argue its the over the top immune response Ebola induces that kills you....not the damage Ebola itself does.

The molecular biology of how Ebola works is rather intriguing IMO..

So if you have Ebola replicating, you get the immune response symptoms fever, fatigue, and muscle aches very early.

The second question is harder to call due to lack of data.

A huge part is you have to get to a doctor early. If you don't, there is little they can do for you.

This is why I said when the Duncan story broke that he was dead. If he ever had a chance, it was lost when the hospital sent him home the first time.

Also, I have to think that either of the manufacturers of the most effective experimental meds (TKM-Ebola and ZMapp), have started to ramp up production of them again. Maybe fast enough to get this nurse some doses...

Even if not, there are some HIV meds that have indicated efficacy.

But the crucical value is time.

I'm pulling a number out of my arse, but I would say the mortality chance of the nurse is around 20-30%

I don't believe so... someone has to be displaying symptoms to transmit.

Humans are not infectious until they develop symptoms. First symptoms are the sudden onset of fever fatigue, muscle pain, headache and sore throat.

These generic symptoms can last about 5 days before shite starts to get real:

I believe I've read that with supportive treatment, which is all there is, it's about 50%. Meanwhile, the Lizzies have to maintain perfect protocol when dealing with the copious amounts of Ebola juice the victims are producing for up to 10 days or so. Nice.

I'm not a health care professional, but I took a personal and detailed interest in Ebola years and years ago. And got enough formal education in biochemistry to stay along in the conversation.

You can ask any of the many doctors who frequent these threads....I'm not spewing bullshite.

The guy directly asked for my input. I gave it. At least I qualified the opinion as such. In fact, it's possible that 20-30 may be too high.

Better that than the doomsayers who are trying to insist so very hard that this is airbourne.
