To me, this just proves that hospital healthcare workers aren't qualified to handle this situation.

I find no comfort in the fact that procedures exist that protect from ebola...when a nurse working in the hospital cannot easily follow those procedures enough to not expose herself.

Protocols are useless when they aren't shared with staff in advance. I know my hospital hasn't done a damn thing to alert staff to what to do if an Ebola patient pops up. They just said on CNN that many hospitals across the nation are the same way.

Although.....if I was that nurse in Dallas and I didn't feel like I had enough adequate training in proper protocols and how to wear all the equipment correctly.....I would have refused my assignment until I received training.

What if they just fired you and hired someone who was willing to do it?

That's my point. I"m not placing blame on the nurse. In fact, I'm sure she was very interested in not contracting Ebola.

So, unless she's just off the charts incompetent, this is a test case that normal healthcare workers aren't qualified to deal with this.

The only thing that matters is the containment of this virus. Nurses who get defensive by pointing out that they are not trained for this situation are missing the point. Others are being defensive by pointing out that protocols exist to prevent this type of situation are missing the point as well.

I'm not saying that one situation is necessarily indicative of what will happen moving forward. Maybe this will be the only situation where this would occur.

But, you don't have to be crazy to pay attention when a healthcare worker with PPE contracts the virus.

That would totally be like a hospital to do that.

But we are talking about Ebola. I wouldn't be bullied into risking my life and the health of the general public like that. They could fire me and then I would sue them for not providing proper training. Some attorney would snatch that case right up.

Yeah until we know the exact details of her exact behavior...all we can do is just guess

True...but it's reasonable to think that she would be acting very carefully (to the best of her ability). It would take extreme incompetence to put the blame on her.

Yeah, but you'd still have an untrained nurse treating Ebola patients

Is that the law that they have to identify her? Why would you want to be identified?

Poor gal. Even if she survives, she'll be the "Ebola" girl for the rest of her life.

Seriously though, I'm guessing they are putting her name out so those that have close contact with her can come forward and get tested.

No I understand. But they need to address the fact that many healthcare workers are not trained to deal with this. I mean....they keep showing diagrams of cdc protocols....that show staff putting on the plastic gowns that open in the back. How is that the same as a hazmat suit?

The bigger question is why not have him in a hospital with a decent isolation ward.

Absolutely nothing good, and would undermine what they are trying to do.

She is just being a nurse advocate.
