Jennings/Harris, Harris/Jennings
why is this coach fielding a team without a QB that cannot throw a routine pass?
only 2 scholarship QBs on the team. why? There are probably 50 QBs in Division 2, or whatever it is called now that can throw a routine pass
can't they even have one slew foot accurate pocket passer on the team?

Really? He had 6 tackles, 1.5 TFL and 1 sack. Lacouture played well.
Don't mean to keep harping on this, but Lacouture had his best game of the year against Auburn. He was our 4th leading tackler in the game (Hunter, Mills, and Adams had more) as a DT (that's pretty good).
In general, our defense seems out of position a lot. IMO this comes from players thinking they need to make every play themselves, rather than playing their proscribed roles. How much of this is Lacouture's fault? We can't tell. Hard to know.

More concerned with why Chavis doesn't rotate his DL and LLB. No one is playing well enough to stay in all the time.thmas needs to go ahead and fix his arm.

Nice overview, and some good points. DL and LBer positions simply are sever weak links and I don't know if this team can overcome it this season.
I know people have stated that the early departures have killed this team, but at the DT position for example, LSU lost Brockers and Logan (both wouldn't be here this year). Johnson and ferguson had 1 year of eligibility left, but Ego had been here four years.
Those losses hurt, no doubt, but the fact that players leaving 1 year early left such a game goes entirely on the coaching staff's head. Their recruiting at DE and DT has been mediocre at best since 2010.
2010, we took three DEs and no DTs, turned one into a DT (Ferguson) and another into a FB (Copeland) while Allen stayed at DE. (3 DL players of which only 2 stayed on DL).
2011, Two DE prospects and Two DT prospects (seems reasonable), except one DT prospect has done nothing (Mickey Johnson) and was chosen over Chucky Hunter, Anthony Johnson was okay, and Quentin Thomas has been okay and shifted to DT. So we had Rasco as our only DE in that class.
So far, you have 5 Defensive lineman that are participating from those two classes which is down right horrible.
2012 - LSU takes ONE freaking Defensive line player and its D Hunter. While he's been solid, and Toshiro Davis was another option, neither had any shot at playing DT and we took none.
That's 4 players that play DT in 3 years with one not even playing after 4 years.
2013 - LSU loads up on DL with 7 recruits. Herron, Patterson, Bower, LaCouture, Neal, Bain, and Gilmore. Because of the depth issues from 2010-2012, these guys are going to struggle and not get time to be developed or are simply busts.
In the end, this is my issue with Les' recruiting. They try to fix problems with one year of high volume recruiting rather than consistent recruiting and that is the difference between LSU and Bama right now. Saban doesn't take a year off from positions, and it shows with consistency despite early departures.
LB is another pure example of this. LSU takes 2 mediocre LBs in 2010 with only 1 still on the team (Welter) then 1 in 2011 (Randle) that isn't even on the team anymore. So from 2 recruiting classes, LSU had 1, ONE!, LBer and it was Welter.
2012 resulted in overkill at the position with 6 LBers and only one has developed into anything consistent (Kwon). 2013, we took 3, converted one into a FB that isn't even starting, another and tried to make him a DE can't get on the field ahead of Welter, and the 3rd looks to be a special teamer.
There is a huge flaw in Les and Company's recruiting strategy and therein lies the issues with this team. It's not just about attrition.

What?
LSU has been known for continuously rotating the D-line in years past.

this is what kills me about some people. You can't just look at raw statistics to determine if someone plays well. You have to actually watch the game to see how those tackles were made and whether he's a disruptive force.
I challenge you to show me where Lacouture was consistently disruptive against Auburn.

I really think its a busted talent problem and a coaching problem on the D-line.

and we're not used to that as LSU fans. the d-line has been incredible in miles tenure. that's being 100% honest.
this season and last on the d-line were extremely weak.
this year the excuse is youth, last year, talent, with two veterans.

Well first of all, I don't think you'll be convinced no matter what. Secondly, his TFL and sack illustrate the extent of his disruptiveness.
As for players being consistently out of position and being over aggressive, it is hard to know who's fault that is. I'm not sure that is all on Lacouture. We don't know what each player is supposed to be doing on any given play. We don't know whose responsibility it is to get players lined up in the right gaps.
What we do know is that Lacouture played better than (a) any other DT we had and (b) most of our other players on defense. That is what we know.

This is an area where I am extremely concerned. I am also concerned with linebackers. We have brought in tons of line backers the last few classes and there seems to be many busts littered throughout that position. What happened to Chavis being a linebacker guru? And before anyone complains about Welter, the problem seems deeper than that imo.

Harris was terrible against a top 5 team... Jennings was terrible against New Mexico St. One is more understandable than the other
Can we not agree that Jennings game had a bit of a snowball effect on his performance? He fumbled on a hard run, not excusable, but it happens. Then was booed and tried to force it to save himself against a team we knew we would beat. It was a bad game, no doubt, but he was pretty safe with the ball up until that point. Jennings also led a (mostly running) drive to go up 14-0, then Harris comes down the field, throwing one pass, to score and and now really delfate a team that is down 21-0 in the first half and already have 4 turnovers. They were demoralized.
I'm not saying one is better than the other, just that we should give this situation proper perspective.
Jennings has proven he can at least keep our head above water, Harris has proven he can make spectacular plays with no pressure. I personally don't want to lose anymore games, so we need to be flexible with our QB options to put us in a good place to compete.
The "let Harris take his lumps" crowd are the same fools that will call for a coaches head if we don't perform. I seriously don't think these people realize that letting Harris take his lumps, has and still does mean more losses.

Neal and Clark also rotate in regularly. At DT we go four deep without QT (Lacouture, Godchaux, Neal, Bain).
