Has LSU football improved under CLM?

Serious question. When Saban left, the expectations for continued success was very high. LSU has realized "success" unlike anything else in its long history. I believe that CLM has 2 SEC titles to his credit and one NC. His teams have put a lot of players in the NFL. These are without question marks of success.
BUT, is this program better now than when CLM took over? It is not clear to me that it is. I do not doubt that from an administrative perspective, that it is much better so far as revenue is concerned, but I am not privy to that information.
What defines improvement? IMHO, championships are the benchmark because all else follow from that. That said, is the program poised to win championships? Looking around the SEC west, it is clear that all the teams save LSU (maybe Arky) are improved this year. All look to be headed up, but LSU is clearly going down. 1/9 may have a lot to do with LSU's current predicament.
In CLM's defense, LSU got jobbed having to play 'Bama twice to win the NC. I think LSU beats any other opponent on that day. If they win that game, then the heat on CLM is nowhere near what it is now. Still, his coaching "quirks" are becoming fatal flaws now that the blowouts have begun. He seem confused about everything, especially clock management. If he is such a good recruiter , why do so many La player go to other SEC teams? Why can he not get a good QB?
There are many other questions facing him and this program, but what do you say about whether it is better now than when he took over?

We have improved the quality of the grass on our field...

Yes. The sustained success has us in the elite. However, he can bring it all down too.

Yes. The bar has been set high. Could always be worse.

You make some strong points and ask some crucial questions.

Les didn't improve what Saban started. Les benefitted from everything Saban built.
Les wasn't a "great" coach when we hired him. LSU made Les not vice versa. If he wants to prove he is a great coach he needs to rebuild a program.

What did saban build? Lsu played football before 2000. Some people tend to forget.
You wanna se a built program. Oklahoma State. LSU has never been as bad as they were.

The fact that LSU's football program is in better shape today than it was on Christmas 2004 cannot be debated, and I defy anyone who disagrees with me to cite comprehensive on-field results to suggest that I am wrong.

it's in much better shape than the whimper vs Iowa in Saban's last game

Saban had the administration build the learning center for athletes, the football operations center and probably a few other things that have a great impact on recruiting...benefitting the next coach. Not to mention saban won a national title showing in state recruits they don't have to go out of state to win titles. Saban took us from a loser to an elite program.
As for Ok. St. Gundy has improved that program dramatically since Les left. I guess he is a much better coach.

Well it's the winningest program in the conference since miles has been here...so I would say yea, it's improved

quote:I'd venture to say that CLM could never come in after a 3-8 season and turn them into National Champions. He was handed the Keys to the Kingdom - momentum, mind set and all the intangibles included. Those that say Miles didn't benefit from that for a very long time just aren't being honest. To say that he could raise the team from their current state to another NC is simply not in the cards.

NO, Saban and Emmertt took over a woeful program in 2000. I was so bad we were busing the team to the practice field and yet won @ SEC Championships and a National Championship in only 5 years and with all the players that Saban recruited with the EXCEPTION of 1, won another title on 07. Miles inherited the top SEC program with by far the most talented roster and yet he still managed to lose 2 games a year and in o7 all he had to do was beat Arkansas, last game of the year to take the NC, but instead he called them AR-Kansas and had their team and State so fire up we got a royal butt kicking and if not for all the stars lining up and everybody losing we would have no played for the National Title that year, and still you have a dozen teams that claim they should have played in that game not LSU. You can say under MILES watch we have been passed up now even by OLE MISS and MISS STATE. The man has access to a Talent pool unlike others and he has done LESS With more than anybody in memory. Spurrier who I do not like would have had 3 titles at least if he would have taken over in 05 or Jimbo and that's a minimum of 3. Les Mile will not WIN another NC as a coach miracles don't happen twice.

Yes
And it's been consistent
And now it's declining

It did not improve. It was at the top and he kept it there for a few years but he is not making the adjustments that other programs are making to maintain that and we are dropping like a door knob.
