Got charged with a felony and they took a week and a half to set my bond for some reason. Fun times

Very sad bump: the young man committed suicide.

Damn just read the article you posted. Simply heartbreaking. Although I did squirm a bit when I read the quote "this is bigger than Michael brown." What family member thinks to say that the night of the suicide? That would be the last thought in my mind comparing it to another scenario.

NYC gives zero fricks about "your rights", yet it is held up as a bright, shining liberal star.

I doubt the prosecutor will face anything, the other defendant in the case when home after arraignment, Browder was on probation, is why he had a bond. As far as the 6th amendment did his attorney raise this issue at all?

IIRC LA has more people incarcerated per capita with a higher crime rate than NYC, though I don't have any stats to back tha to up at the moment.

The blame is not completely on the prosecutors with these types of issues. Judges and defense attorneys can be just as much to blame if not more as explained below.
Just like its always easy to blame the cops for issues without looking at the whole story, this problem is the same.

Also, having 5,965 felonies to prosecute in one year is a serious backlog on the courts. The shame is that the state allows this one court to have a backlog that big and not bring in help with more judges and lawyers.

A better comparison is NYC to NO and yes, you're correct (re: murder rate for sure). Who knows though, b/c NYPD cooks the books on crime pretty regularly.
NYC bans guns and aggressively uses "stop and frisk". Those policies are allowed b/c the rich think this reduces crime. They don't fear stop and frisk b/c they are moneyed and they have jobs.
If someone gets locked up for a few years with no charges filed or on occasion a suit-wearing black guy gets mistakenly detained, oh well, that's the cost of a safe city.
