Same here, unless you plan on running really big, aggressive tires and maybe a lift(which you've already said you don't) the stock axles will last you many, many years.

Exactly. To each their own, but this is a piece of equipment and will be used as such. It will not be an obnoxious, lifted showpiece.

there's a happy functional middle ground of putting a small lift and little bit bigger tires on these side by sides that's more than just being a show piece. They function better in mud, water, and going over fallen trees etc.

Agreed. With normal use and a small lift one shouldn't encounter any axle problems.

I recently bought a 2015 ranger 900xp. Power steering is a 900 dollar option. I run 30" tires on mine and power steering is not needed. You move 6 inches forward and you can effortlessly turn your wheel all the way whichever way you want. I guess it would be nice for all day trail riding while simultaneously drinking beer but I dont do those rides often enough to worry about that.

I know 5 guys with them. All repeatedly break axles. The only one that has big aggresive tires is a 900 so I don't really count that. Its broken one and I understand why. The rest are 3 double seaters and 2 electric. All have had to replace MULTIPLE axles and they have all broken doing nothing. A couple broke in the damn yard. Srlsy, I'm gonna have to get something in the next year and I think I'm gonna have to look over Polaris strictly because of this issue.

I asked to drive one with and without at the dealer before I purchased mine. A grown man can handle the steering without it just fine, but I ended up getting it. I have 2 kids, and I knew the power steering would make it easier for them to drive around. I also liked the way it steered with it, but wouldn't say I couldn't do without it. Before I drove both, I wasn't going to get it. After I drove both, I got it. So, I guess I would suggest you ask to drive each and make your decision based on that and if you want to spend the extra $.

I have a buddy who has a can am commander. He has broke 3 of the 4 axles in less than a year. He also ripped the tie rod out of the his front end and stripped the rack. Point is all of these things break axles. Go buy a decent set of aftermarket axles and quit worrying about it.

It's apparently a common issue with the commanders on the earlier models having the splines strip on the coupler connecting the powersteering unit to the steering rack. They updated the design on the '14 models to correct the issue. If I remember correctly you can't even buy the coupler for the 12-13 models any longer.

So no snorkels, stereo, lift, LED's?

I LOVE having power steering on mine. It's nice on tight trails and ruts or climbing steep inclines in Ms. That's just my .02 cents.

I'd say some auxiliary lighting is a useful item and one that I would add. The rest.... no sir.

I'd be interested in knowing the age and hours/miles on your friend's Rangers that have have broken axles.

As do I, but mine are young enough where they will be in lap driving it for the next few years.
FYI - I'm going for a test drive at 2 p.m. today and will bump the thread shortly thereafter with my observations.

If you are in the Northshore/Folsom area you are more than welcome to drive mine if needed.

Power steering is not the issue on our crew, it's the shitty turning radius.

I took it our and was fine with no power steering, but it would have been nice when you get in rutted out roads...I can see it being a problem in some terrain. I am not one to get too terribly rough on stuff, and get in bad spots. If you are I would pay the extra.

I only got a roof, winch, and half windshield(cant stand not feeling the wind, even when cold) so the kids could duck behind it.
I was looking at a 2014 800, but the new 2015s look a little better to me and they now put out 44 hp in the 570, which I thought was pretty good.

I have a 800 that I've owned for 2 years almost 3. I could have went with either Camo/no power steering or green/with power steering for the same money. It was a no brainer once I drove both. The power steering is legit. I only run 28" 589's but you can tell a big difference when the power steering isn't operating.
As for the axle issue, you find it a lot more prevalent in RZR's instead of Ranger's. I've also noticed that I see a lot more axles broken by folks who don't know how to drive a SxS,than folks who do. I've not broken a single axle on mine and we trail ride often and I don't hesitate to take it anywhere I need to go in the duck holes or deer woods.Learn to actually drive and stay away from lifts that give you extreme axle angles and you'll be ok.
Verdict: I would 100% go with power steering

Got a 2010 800, only mechinical repairs is fuel pump recently. It's had 28" mud lite xl's on it since the day it was bought. Narry a axel replaced. Not saying it won't happen but it wouldn't affect my purchase of another ranger
