Not really, but I didn't expect him to be this bad. Not sure you realize just how bad a sub .600 OPS is.
Just some of the guys mentioned in this thread, Mantle had a .782 OPS in his final season. Willy Mays had a .907 OPS in his final full season at age 40 (had a couple more seasons with under 90 games).
Ripken was pretty bad as well. .239 AVG .637 OPS. I believe he and Biggio are the only other in the 3000 hit club with a sub .700 OPS in their final full season.

Larkins last season, also age 40.
.771 OPS

Prince Fielders swing reminds me of Mo Vaughn

I really believe Rizzo is gonna be a star.

Rizzo has big time potential. As bad as the Cubs have been recently, they have the young talent to make a run in a couple years

I've checked out on the baseball season, have they been playing Jeter at short?

He's actually been about the same as he has been in the field for the past 4 or 5 years (not that he's not a bad fielder, just saying). The real struggle has been at the plate.

Chipper Jones' final season in 2012 was his age 40 season 20 years after he debuted.
He triple-slashed .287/.377/.455

I was waiting for chipper to pop up in this thread

Im laughing at Jeter being placed in the same category as mays and mantle.
the OP's question was
quote:& I consider Mantle & Mays as all-time greats.
How bad is Derek Jeter's final season? Possibly worst final full-time season for an all-time great ever?

How many rings does Larkin have? Just curious
The same as the # of MVPs Larkin has, how many MVPs does Jeter have?

Ideally, Jeter should have retired after the 2013 season.
But if you'll recall, last year was the "farewell tour" circus for Mariano Rivera, with this silly new-tradition of giving presents and having speeches from a visiting team's hero.
I guess it would have been too much to have Rivera and Jeter retiring at the same time. So we get this "farewell tour" circus again this year with Jeter, in the midst of his career-worst season.
Someone suggested earlier in this thread that he has mentally "checked out" already- I completely agree.

while the ending to his Texas tenure has made me truly dislike the man, Josh Hamilton's swing in his 2010 MVP season was thing of beauty. This was before he started chasing every outside pitch. He stayed so compact and just made it look effortless

Player A: .239/.297/.361/.637
Player B: .249/.298/.297/.595
Player C: .251/.285/.381/.666
Player D: .233/.267/.259/.526
Player E: .239/.270/.326/.596
Now not all of these players are HoF but they were all considered great players at one point or another.
