Myth of arctic meltdown: Satellite images show summer ice cap growing

That polar ice cap that Al gore said would be gone by now? Is has grown by an area the size of Alaska in just the past two years.

The speech by former US Vice-President Al Gore was apocalyptic. ‘The North Polar ice cap is falling off a cliff,’ he said. ‘It could be completely gone in summer in as little as seven years. Seven years from now.’ Those comments came in 2007 as Mr Gore accepted the Nobel Peace Prize for his campaigning on climate change.
But seven years after his warning, The Mail on Sunday can reveal that, far from vanishing, the Arctic ice cap has expanded for the second year in succession – with a surge, depending on how you measure it, of between 43 and 63 per cent since 2012.
To put it another way, an area the size of Alaska, America’s biggest state, was open water two years ago, but is again now covered by ice.
The most widely used measurements of Arctic ice extent are the daily satellite readings issued by the US National Snow and Ice Data Center, which is co-funded by Nasa. These reveal that – while the long-term trend still shows a decline – last Monday, August 25, the area of the Arctic Ocean with at least 15 per cent ice cover was 5.62 million square kilometres.
This was the highest level recorded on that date since 2006 (see graph, right), and represents an increase of 1.71 million square kilometres over the past two years – an impressive 43 per cent.
The satellite images published here are taken from a further authoritative source, the University of Illinois’s Cryosphere project.
They show that as well as becoming more extensive, the ice has grown more concentrated, with the purple areas – denoting regions where the ice pack is most dense – increasing markedly.
Crucially, the ice is also thicker, and therefore more resilient to future melting. Professor Andrew Shepherd, of Leeds University, an expert in climate satellite monitoring, said yesterday: ‘It is clear from the measurements we have collected that the Arctic sea ice has experienced a significant recovery in thickness over the past year.
‘It seems that an unusually cool summer in 2013 allowed more ice to survive through to last winter. This means that the Arctic sea ice pack is thicker and stronger than usual, and this should be taken into account when making predictions of its future extent.’

Why do you hate science? Oh, and provable facts?

It's an Inconvenient Truth to him.

bullshite, it's littered with floating polar bear corpses

Wow look! There's more Arctic ice than there was during the record low! No way! That never happens!
Was Al Gore wrong?

I don't have an opinion on Global Warming, but I do know the DailyMail is a tabloid in the UK.

And you keep using the term "flat earth", when in reality it is a myth that the earth being flat was ever a mainstream belief.

Nobody cares what Tigah in the ATL has to say, he's an idiot.

this is one issue that I have absolutely no clue on what to believe

You might start by not getting your scientific news from a rag like the Daily Mail which apparently doesn't know the difference between the Arctic and the Antarctic. Try reading the source they cite and tell me if you reach the same conclusion.

Tabloid!
What is your definiton for the "Scientists" who have been cooking the books to indicate global distruction as a result of "man made" Global Warming.

What a coincidence... Recent images of my weiner show it is shrinking.
Global cooling is real

Global warming, like evolution, is a long-term process that unfortunately many people fail to grasp. It's essentially unanimous among leading scientists around the world that global warming is real. But they predict an average global temperature increase of only 1 degree by 2100. However, the rate of temperature increase will continue to rise with passing centuries.
Centuries. Not months. Not years. Centuries. That's why so many people fail to accept it. Just because person A got a record amount of snowfall last winter does not disprove the entire scientific community!

i'm in the same boat
on one side you have a group hiding behind the 'science' label who are creating a disaster to ensure their financial well being
on the other side, you have a group that is reacting to the above abuses by creating their own facts and methods
i mean i think the biggest issue is what effects humans have on this issue, but we can't even have that discussion b/c the self-serving people acting as scientists on this issue can't even agree what is going on with the temperatures that we're using for the discussion
