Federal 3.5 in fields, 3" in the timber
Posted on 8/20/14 at 5:41 pm to Speck
No real brand loyalty here but on big water or bigger timber holes I shoot the upper end loads (dry lock, heavy metal, or at least some other 3.5) like 3s best.
Now in tight quarters I'll shoot the cheap stuff. However if your small hole is frozen in the morning and you have to move to big water and got the cheap stuff it makes for a frustrating morning. Or you just steal some good ones from KR. Careful though don't get between him and the snack bag.

Anything double ought, but then again, it's a Winchester Riot.

I'll let you slide just that one time.
Damnit it was a cold one that morning. Couldn't start the 4 wheeler, late to the hole. Dog was a pussy on the ice. Killing ducks and having to break 1700 yards of ice to retrieve them. Leaving hole. Going to big water. Shooting like shite with 2 3/4 5's. Dog wouldn't get into the blind from the boat. Getting in the boat to chase cripples. Ducks all around. Cripple keeps diving and eluding us.
Good times, and awesome snacks.

Shoot anything from No. 2, 3, 4 and 6's. Mostly 2 3/4 and some 3 inch. Have been using some low brass 6's for decoyers, then up for second and third shot. If the winds blowing hard, 3 inch number 2's all the way.

Anyone have any experience with them? Opinions?
Never shot Rio steel, but shoot ~ 50 cases of Rio target loads every year (sporting clay, trap, skeet).
They are some of the cleanest (and cheapest) shells I've ever used.

In fact, most of our blind uses that - knocks em down every time.

Generally Kent/Estate/Xpress 3" #3s if I can't find them for a good price. Got 3 cases of xpress this year for $99 delivered. Couldn't pass it up
I've shot #6 rio at teal. It did fine IIRC

Father always bought 3 and 3.5 Estates growing up so I've just stuck with them. Always stock up on a few cases at Simmons on the way to the camp before hunting season.

Rio Bismuth 2-3/4" or 3" #4's in my old A5's.
Federal Blue Box or Kent 3" #4's in other guns for ducks.
2-3/4" Remington High Brass #6 or #4 for tree rats.

Can we also make this the cheap shotgun shell thread also? Need to pick up shells before my South Dakota trip and will be looking for sales...

Rios
Estate
Remington
Kent's
Really whatever. Shells really don't mean a whole bunch if your head is down on the gun. I Have shot 2&3/4 #4s my whole life and never had a problem killing ducks. I will say Xperts pattern the worst out of any shell on the market. That's a fact. Maybe they fixed the problem but I know it was a huge issue for Winchester at one time.

Something really heavy (1 1/2 or better) #1s. I stay away from Xpert because the pellets aren't round and I stay away from anything with a goofy wad because they don't get along with the patternmaster.
