I want to try and avoid the whole Destin/Pensacola tourist section of the gulf coast. Any suggestions of smaller beach towns and beaches?

Forgotten coast. Mexico beach down to port St. Joe and Saint George Island.

Anna Maria island just south if Tampa is very nice and not touristy

Thanks for the suggestion, that seems to be exactly what I am looking for. Any suggestions on places to stay?

That's the issue. I'm not sure there's anywhere nice to stay unless you have a house there.
When I went it was with someone who owned a house.

Cape San Blas if you want quiet.

There's several inns and bed and breakfast places . Apalachicola has hotels. St George probably just rent a house. I think there's one hotel on the island.

I really want to look at that area as a retirement possibility. I have a coworker nearing retirement that just moved to St. George Island (home officed) and loves it. He describes it as nice or nicer beaches, no crowds.

Most of those houses can be rented

Dog Island...can't get any further away from tourists. Minimal amenities but essentially empty beach.

Blacks island resort. It's a magical place

It's my favorite relaxation beach. The drive into PSJ isn't too bad and there are a couple of restaurants.
You can park you boat at the Marina in PSJ and scallop/fish there. They are so close to Appalachicola that lunch oysters are often lifted from the water that morning. Awesome!

try the Ft. Morgan area east of Gump Shores. even if every house is full, the beaches aren't. Relaxonthebeach.com, myers and reed all rent many houses

Reading about the oysters in the area, it seems legit. Love me some fresh oysters

I agree with Port St. Joe and Cape San Blas.
We just got home from the Cape last night and can't wait to get back. It's quiet, relaxing and the water is beautiful. Also the beaches are dog friendly which was a cool aspect. Right now, there are turtle nests everywhere on the island.

Did you catch any scallops?
I'll be there next month

It's legit. At lunch at 11:30am after getting chased off the water by a storm.
Asked for the bag tag that they oyster came out of. Bag tag was 8:23am that day. It was damn near perfect. Hell, it was perfect.
During the scallop season you can scallop in the Bay too. The kids eat that up. They suck to clean but it's just another beer drinking event at the end of the day.

Dune Allen on 30a is an amazingly uncrowded beach. The sand and water are epic.
