The nation's third-largest health insurer had 720,000 people sign up for exchange coverage as of May 20, a spokesman confirmed to IBD. At the end of June, it had fewer than 600,000 paying customers. Aetna expects that to fall to "just over 500,000" by the end of the year.

Of course it is shrinking. Enrollment ended several months ago and no new folks can enroll until November. Because of this it can only go down until November.

man, the number of paying customers is decreasing, not new enrollments.
But good spin

It was designed to fail so that it could be replaced with a single party payer.
Its doing what it was designed to do

If new enrollees were allowed to enroll now the shrinkage would be less, maybe even non-existant.

Why would there be shrinkage? If it was worth a shite then people wouldn't drop out after only a few months of having insurance.

1). New enrollees are allowed with a qualifying event.
2). No, it wouldn't even with open enrollment. You're seeing 10%-25% drops in the insurers surveyed. Open enrollment wouldn't catch that.

1. Few have such events.
2. I think 25% could be reached if enrollment were open now.

Who says people are dropping out?
1. Some are dropping out.
2. Some are former jobless getting jobs so they no longer need their Obamacare policies. Technically they too are "dropping out" but in a good way.
3. Some are dying.
4. Some are emigrating.
5. Some are reaching the age when you qualify for Medicare.
6. Some are reaching age 27, the age when a youth gets tossed from his parents policy under Obamacare.
7. Some are joinging the federal work force where their needs are taken care of by the gvt.

Qualifying events include: job change, including unemployment, marriage, divorce, death, birth. But yeah. No one has any of those.
As to number 2, what is the basis for your claim? We had anemic enrollment for months of a run up to the start of Obamacare but now we'll see 20% of enrollment enroll going forward? Doubtful.

Still well short of the needed 7 million it seems.
Edit after further review I am mistaken please disregard the above message.

Why am I not surprised that a person with "Euro" in their username is a rabid statist?

Interesting article. This same CEO already predicted back in April of this year, that Aetna would have about 450,000 paying customers by the end of the year LINK.
A lot of useless spin here by this author, Jed Graham. Check out his last 5 columns. Looks like he has an agenda.

The number of enrolled hasn't shrunk. The number of paying customers have. You can't assume that the number of paying customers would increase or remain static even if enrollment were open all year. Get it?

I don't think this is true unless non paying customers have been dropped off the rolls.

So the government also predicted that this would happen or just Aetna? I'm not sure how it's spin to point out that an anemic enrollment coupled with a lack of people paying the premiums on their super affordable and awesome new insurance has led to really poor showing for the debut of Obamacare.

That is fricking funny, I don't care who you are.
I don't know you, but you have issues friend. Do you see that you are admitting it is failing? They haven't reached the #s needed to sustain the program and now the amount of paying customers is shrinking even more.
