Tee off together, but Phil and Fowler should have been allowed to finish the hole before the approach shots from the final group

Yeah if Roy has to wait, I doubt he plays the hole. It was damn dark. Can't believe they finished as is.

This.
Rickie and Phil wanted them to get on the fairway so they didnt have to worry about the horn getting them on the tee box. Once you tee off on 18, the horn cant get you.
So they allowed them to tee off with them to make sure the horn wouldnt get them. But they didnt say anything about the 2nd shot / approach shot. And Rory asked the official if they could play up and what not before his 2nd shot and the official said yes, but Rickie and Phil were never consulted about that and werent aware that was going on.
Miscommunication between players and officials.
I would have allowed them to tee off together. But wait to hit their 2nd / approach shot until my group finished the hole.

Would this type of thing ever happen at a US Open?
How dark was it?
I think there was zero chance of blowing a horn on Rory once he got finished hole 17.

Pretty sure Fowler was the one who told Rory to tee off initially, I believe.
You can see Ricky tell Rory McIlroy to go ahead as he walks off the tee.

It was very dark. 5 more minutes and they wouldn't have finished.
The only other point against Phil is that making them hit up could have actually benefited him. Because Rory has to assume he's going to chip in and needs to make birdie. If Rory hit after Phil missed his eagle chip, Rory punches out to 100 and hits lob wedge to 20 feet and 2 putts.

I think Rory would have won regardless but it was interesting for sure
Probably. But I think if Rory hits that same tee shot on 18 tomorrow morning it goes in the water.

With Rory up by 2, yes.
If he were up by 1 or even, make him wait.

You thinking he even hits driver tomorrow morning if he knows he just had to par?

He was hitting driver no matter what, because driver wasn't necessary at that point. Someone had to make eagle just to tie him.
I was cringing when JP let him grab driver, but, the dude has been the best driver of the golf ball on the planet for about 2 months and has a ton of confidence with it...

I think they should have allowed them to play

I would have let them play. Not going to put them in a situation where Rory could call it and have to come back tomorrow to finish the last hole. Shitty thing to do to the fans.

Have none of these officials seen the legend of bagger vance?

If Rory tees of tommorrow knowing he only needs par on a par 5, he prolly just puts the ball up there and it is way easier on him. The chaotic end and not knowing what was needed was way more to Phil and Rickies advantage

I saw that too. Phil was walking away over that bridge like he didn't hear the official talking to him.

If Rory doesn't get to play 18 today, and somehow doesn't make par tomorrow morning, then the entire tournament would always have an asterisks next to it. It would have really tainted the tournament if only the leader (and his partner who is out of it) have to play one hole the next day and he somehow doesn't par a short par 5 that he has played at -4 in the three previous rounds.
He-he, I said taint.

Phil acted like a little bitch. He was down 2 going into the easiest hole on the course and knew he wasn't going to win it. Kudos to Rickie for not acting like a spoiled child.
It was VERY dark and would have been an insult had Phil made Rory basically finish his PGA Champ winning round in the morning.

He had no obligation to allow anyone to play up and anyone who understands golf wouldn't blame him for employing every reasonable strategic advantage he could.
I'm personally glad they played up because I wanted to see it finish, but to criticize Phil is absurd. The pga officials are suppose to let the players make that call.
