Morons are pissed that the movie is different from what they watched as a kid? Shocker, sounds like this board

Bump

Just looked, its down to 20%

Not that I would rely on reviews to decide whether or not I'm gonna watch something because to each his own, but that rating is pretty damning.

This review has convinced me to see it:
quote:

The TMNT lore has changed very little over the years. Four turtles come in contact with a man-made mutagen and grow up in the New York City sewer system obsessed with pizza (specifically for this film, it’s Pizza Hut — why hello there, rampant product placement) and pop culture. The turtles learn ninjutsu from their adoptive father Splinter, a mutated rat, and fight crime. The Bad Guy Organization du jour is the Foot Clan, led by a man known as The Shredder who really likes the idea of eating turtle soup. The comic was created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird 30 years ago, and intended to be a parody of comics at the time.

This movie hits all those points and more, while giving longstanding human companion April O'Neil a more important role in the turtles’ origin story. As O’Neil, Megan Fox gives a surprisingly decent performance given how over-the-top and expository most of her lines are. There are maybe a handful of other humans with speaking roles, all very one-dimensional: a snarky-and-lovelorn co-worker (Will Arnett), a take-no-bullshite boss (Whoopi Goldberg), and a duplicitous businessman working with the bad guys (William Fichtner).

The stars, of course, are the turtles themselves. There was a lot of outrage on the internet when the new, more human-like faces debuted. It’s certainly different but not jarringly so. Whereas the old quartet differed only by bandana color and choice of weapon, the new turtles have distinctive bodies and fashion choices that match their personality (Raphael the most muscular, Donatello the nerdiest) without being too exaggerated. Their voices, like the animation, work surprisingly well — the characters interact with the world in a natural way without any noticeable technical glitches.

This sounds like exactly what I was expecting.

I watched it last night. It's worth going to see it. You just have to go in with a good attitude about it. There were several parts that made me laugh. I enjoyed it and I think kids 9-15 will love it, but it also has enough adult humor for, well, adults.

I've got no desire to see this because, let's be honest, even the originals suck. We're not dealing with a holy text here.

But I love a good pan, and Nathan Rabin just tore this movie a new a-hole

quote:

The astonishingly idiotic latest reboot of the deathless Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise proceeds along similarly contradictory and self-defeating lines. The filmmakers have apparently decided that the children who are the movie’s target demographic want a gritty, realistic take on the material, with the dour sensibility and world-building concerns of the Christopher Nolan Batman movies. They also apparently want something swarming with magical robot warriors, pizza farts, and gags alluding to the Turtles moonlighting as a novelty rap group.

At the center of the film’s incoherent sensibility lies an understandable confusion about the roles superheroes and comic books play in our culture. Are stories like those of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles important mythologies whose origins need to be respected and treated with stone-faced solemnity, or are they silly comic-book nonsense for dull-witted children, and adults with the interests of dull-witted children? TMNT mostly opts for the first approach, but it also indulges in the odd bit of misplaced levity to let audiences know that it doesn’t take itself too seriously, even though it does. Misplaced solemnity and totally awesome Pizza Hut product placement do not make a comfortable fit, and TMNT’s juxtaposition of the serious and the stupid is never as hilariously incongruous as it should be. It can’t even manage to be the right kind of terrible movie.

That's how you say you hated something.

This is one where I trust fans to give reviews. They have more respect for the history and can appreciate it for what it is.

yes; however they did some things well that makes it an interesting watch every now and then...well the first 2 did.

I don't think fan outrage (and how can you be pissed they made a shitty movie) is geared towards the original movies because they weren't original. I think a small segment want it to be like the 80s comics (violent as shite) or like the original animated series (which wasn't as violent but still had the same spirit)

Really I don't care, and I don't think it is hard to make a ninja turtles movie that people enjoy, but the extra bells and whistles one can expect from Michael bay seem to be there...and that makes me want to stay away because it's so distracting I don't even enjoy the movie.

I would be more than interested in seeing a cgi version of the turtles, just not with gizmos on the back, extra dress features to distinguish them further, robot shredder, hummers, etc...how hard is it to put a guy in a shredder suit? I guess that would be more expensive.

anyway, this will be a rental I'll enjoy, but not a theater going experience. I cannot have low expectations when I'm spending $40 (2 tickets and snacks)

TMNT 1 was a solid flick, given the circumstances of both technology avail at the time and the fact they were trying to make a movie about mutant crime fighting reptiles.

TMNT 2 was terrible, but it gave us ninja rap so my 10 yr old self loved it of course.

this one just looks bad all the way around

I took my kids to see it last night. They didn't like the first 1/3 because there were no turtles on screen but were entertained for the last two thirds. It kept me entertained but I went into it with the attitude that it's a kid movie and the movie wasn't really made to intellectually challenge adults.

I agree. they aren't making this movie for me. I wasn't going to see it regardless, nor am I outraged they made it. It's largely review proof, as the gate will be driven by nostalgia-seeking 30-somethings and teenagers and young adults in a state of arrested development. Not to put to fine a point it, but their taste in movie sucks donkey balls, but the movie industry relies on them to go see really big, dumb movies.

TMNT is what it is. It's a big, dumb movie that will make a bunch of money. It won't be very good, nor is it intended to be. Any chance this had of being good was out the window when we were relying on the aesthetic judgment of Michael Bay and the acting chops of Megan Fox.

Being angry about this movie is like screaming at the tides. The people who are going to see it are going to see it regardless of the reviews. Hell, they probably will see it BECAUSE of the bad reviews. As I really enjoyed Rabin's 1-star review, TMNT has already given me more joy than I thought it would, so I'm happy it exists.

Saw this movie last night, it sucked. I seriously didn't even laugh once. Bad acting, same story, splinter was terrible, and freaking Johnny Knoxville was the voice for Leo. Maybe I'm extra hard on it bc GotG was soo good last week.
