GOTG and Why Superhero Movies Shouldn’t Be Afraid to Get Colorful

A couple of days after the brand-new Wonder Woman costume from Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice was revealed, my mom called me with an important question. “Why is it brown?” she asked.
“I don’t think it is brown,” I said. “The director, Zack Snyder, just favors these desaturated filters that make it look like that.”

It seems like ever since the first X-Men film came out in 2000, filmmakers have gotten gun-shy when it comes to dressing superheroes in their native garb.

There was a Twitter joke going around last week that imagined what Snyder might do with the comparatively colorful The Avengers:

Did you guys see Zack Snyder's early concept art for the Avengers:

Solid article about the oversaturation of desaturated superheroes

There's a fear of cheesiness, innocence, child-like images, etc.
I feel the Avengers and Iron Man specifically had a lot of color. Only the Cap movies have lacked color, and even that's a stretch. Cap 1 was done on purpose to look vintage, not to look darkity dark or to tone down the happiness with color.
See Asgard as well.

The color is one of the problems I have with the new costume. Overall, it's decent, but why get rid of the red, white, and blue?
I guess they plan on deleting her entire reason for coming to America.
Either way, I agree with the writer. You can have dark and gritty while still retaining the color and fun of the comic books.
And yes, I know she was made red, white, and blue due to WWII, but they have since given that a reason and I don't think it should be thrown away so casually.

Superhero movies have to be all grim and dark now. You can thank Chris Nolan for that. I think the look of Burton's Batman movies was a good balance of dark and colorful. As long as you don't go full retard like Joel Schumacher its ok.

It comes down to a matter of taste in the long run I guess.
It's been awhile since I've read comics regularly but I still check them out from time to time. When they went to the whole tinted things (like everything on a page would have a red or a green tint) I never cared for it. And this was art by some of my favorite artists like Perez.
I think in the long run it may prove to be a fad like how for awhile everyone was wearing a jacket or everything was "grim".

Other than Iron Man and Spider-Man, they all have a level of embarrassment when it comes to superheroes. Similar embarrassment with the secret identity thing.

I don't understand why you can't like both. Winter Soldier didn't have a lot of color in it and it was GREAT. Just because it doesn't have color in it doesn't mean it can't be good. Personally, I like seeing different takes on superheroes. They don't all HAVE to be colorful.

If Nolan's movies weren't so successfull we wouldn't have this problem. Some characters, like Batman, lend themselves to a dark tone. Some characters, like Superman, don't. I'm kind of interested to see the Marvel shows on Netflix because they could go darker with them and have it still work.

It's just my tastes I guess. I just don't care for monotone comics and comic movies. Not sure why. Doesn't mean I can't like the movie but I just the drab colors just don't appeal to me.
But I don't have a problem with people who do like that style.

And I don't have a problem with people who like some color in their movies. It's just funny to me how people seem to have a double standard when it comes to CA 2.

I don't know if people would want to turn Batman into a home invasion flick....
