What would the homeless rate be if America did not have section8?

So about a year ago, low income housing for people eligible for section 8 was built in my area. There was a bit of protest, as the region is already overcrowded, and it would probably "taint" a really nice golf club that is right next to it.
Already, I have noticed a general decline in the area when it comes to the cleanliness of the shopping centers, grocery stores, malls, etc, and the police blotter section in the newspaper is getting a lot larger.
If these people would otherwise be homeless, I guess the tradeoff is worth it, but I still am a bit annoyed at the "degradation" that these people seem to bring with them.

What do you mean "these people"?

That's a big if. Many make an argument that the huge safety net encourages an increase in a need for section 8.
ETA: I guess my point is that it would probably be around the same, maybe a little less. The people that really can work would be forced to do so rather than be able to take the easy way out.

They've been building up apartments outside my community....also been building up half a million dollar homes, but if we get a metro route anytime soon I'll be moving out to Magnolia.
Metro brings the trash in Houston. Just look at Spring.

Probably about like it is now. Subsidized housing helps keep prices above equilibrium. Without subsidies, maybe we would have affordable housing.

Lower because rents would be lower. Here in SF a lot of the hotel rooms are taken by people on section8 and it keeps the rents higher since the owners can get the higher rents paid by the government.

we should cut out all these programs and just cut poor people checks.

In addition to a large increase in litter and crime, in a few years you will see that the majority of these people will not properly maintain their home. You will see things like houses that are badly in need of paint and have rotting window trim. I don't know if it's because they don't know how to maintain the house or can't afford to or just don't care. Govt sponsored home ownership is terrible for the integrity of a neighborhood.

zero.
The free market would finally be able to help these people.
Get government out of the way!!!

They would not be homeless. They would have to spend more of their disposible income on housing or get jobs. Section 8 is a scam and a cancer on society. It will probably destroy the entire community because once a property goes section 8, in good time, all of the surrounding properties will go section 8 as well because only trash want to rent it and landlords know that it's a steady paycheck every month. Landlords also know that they won't have to worry about maintaining their property any more because section 8 tenants don't care, they'll just destroy the place anyways. Section 8 housing is responsible for 90% of the robberies and property crime around LSU's campus, as well as the vast majority of the murders and other violent crimes.

There probably would be more homeless families but the key here is that the black community would never sit idly by and let section 8 and "affordable housing" go away. They would protest, rally, and be all over TV denouncing the action as racist.
In that regard they are more successful and affecting public policy than most political movements, including the tea party. They aren't just trolling Internet forums and making "Obama is the worst" posts on Facebook.

you shouldn't be surprised that section 8 housing would bring about a lower standard of living in a area.

If you cancelled it now then the rate would be very high. But, if you never ever had it then it probably would be low because we wouldn't have a huge incentive for people to make terrible decisions all these years. Natural Selection would rightfully take hold.
