I'm not really a hunter, but I figure that now that I will be living in a home where I can have one, getting one wouldn't be a bad idea (I'll be living in Capitol Heights in BR).

I do enjoy target shooting, as does my SO, and I have the ability to go shooting at my parents' property on the weekends.

What are some brands I should certainly look at? What's going to get me the best value?

You are going to need to narrow it down a little: handgun, rifle, shotgun, budget...

Pistol?
Shotgun?
Rifle?

Need more information to make a recommendation. Don't get tunnel vision on a specific manufacturer until you decide what you are wanting out of the gun.

Get an AK. Very simple to operate. Chimps and children use them regularly.

Rifle: Ruger 10/22
Shotgun: Remington 870
Pistol: too many choices here, try out as many as you can and pick the one that feels right and has good reviews
Revolver: Something S&W

You'll spend more on ammo than for the gun, so if you have a small budget go with something in .22LR.

For target shooting I find two things to be the most fun:

A Henry lever action .22 rifle

Or

A big arse handgun

Something like a ruger Blackhawk is a good first gun. They're easy to shoot well, very durable, priced reasonably, etc.

Plenty of options out there. It's all in what appeals to you. If I could only have one gun to waste ammo with for the rest of my life, it'd be an open sighted lever action .22

Gotta decide what type of gun you want first. For pistols, I really like my Walther PPQ-M2, and will either get a Sig P226 or M&P Shield next(small gun)

Shotguns, go with an 870 Tactical or a Benelli Nova Tactical. Both are reasonably priced, and are designed for home defense.

Once you decide you may want to visit the Bayou Shooter web site. They have a market pace for new and used guns.

If you want to shoot a heavy load get you a Colt 1911, if you want to swallow a load get you a Glock.
