How Awesome Was NASA Back In The Day?

The first launch of the Saturn V rocket was in Nov of 1967. One year later, they sent men around the moon in one. Six months after that, they sent men to land on the moon in one.
We went from testing the most complex machine ever built to make sure it would work to landing human beings on the moon in a year and a half. It took only six and a half years to go from the entire theoretical system on paper to "one small step."
To put it into perspective, its been three years since the last space shuttle flight. The shuttles successor, the SLS, is scheduled to test launch in 2017, six years after the last shuttle launch. The SLS will mostly be based off of existing technology and designed using the most powerful computers in history.
The Saturn V was designed from scratch by a bunch of guys with slide rules and onion skin paper.

Seeing how massive the Saturn V is in person is amazing. NASA is a must visit if you are in Houston.

No shite. Obama doesn't give a shite about space. Or see that in going to the moon, America gained so many products and technology that make life easier. Or inspire the american people to want to accomplish great things. He just inspires America to hate wealthy people.

I got an opportunity to do this on Sunday, which happened to be the 45th anniversary of the first moon walk. It was absolutely amazing to see that rocket up close and personal, and even more amazing to think about what those guys were able to accomplish given the technology difference between then and now.
I took some pictures next to the rocket to give some vantage point of how incredibly huge those engines are..but it's hopeless to try and show that in a picture.
The space center was pretty meh overall, but the walking around that rocket for 20 minutes staring at it in awe was worth the price of admission imo.

I agree with you Rocket Park is the only reason to go. The short tours of the training facility and mission control are ok but nothing special.

Its unfortunate that Johnson has gone downhill. I remember going as a kid during the height of the Shuttle that there was always something going on. I went three years ago, and it was dead.
Now, I did get to visit Kennedy back in 2007 during a Shuttle Launch. Kennedy is awesome.

the Saturn V is hands down the coolest thing humans have ever invented

on Apollo 15, the calculated total liftoff thrust (based on actual measurements) was about 7,830,000 pounds-force (34.81 MN), which increased to 9,200,000 pounds-force (40.8 MN) at T+135 seconds, just before center engine cutoff (CECO)

SLS-130 will provide 9.2 million pounds of thrust at liftoff. The SLS-70 will provide 8.4 million. NASA is still awesome.

Did you see what is going on with the plane and the shuttle? I see it every day but I never walk over there to see if anything has been done. Get any pics of that up close?

I totally agree with this. I was amazed at the size of the Saturn V when I visited KSC.
Last year, I had training at NASA where we were in the building where the Astronauts lived in and prepared prior to launches. They allowed us to privately tour the apartments and the room where the Astronauts would get into their space suites prior to launch. It has been left completely in tact from the original space program. It was an awesome experience.
I think it is pathetic that we've allowed this nation to degrade to the point where we can no longer launch a manned spacecraft. It is pathetic! Our political leadership sucks and has for twenty years. It is our own fault for allowing this happen. We keep electing these jerks who do nothing but look the country.
A Titan IV launched tonight at 6:55 PM. We have great weather today, it should be easily seen from SAB.

How does that compare to modern transport lift rockets? (falcon for instance)

Launched in July 2014, the Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) mission tracks the ebb and flow of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is linked to global warming and one of the most important heat-trapping greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. The mission is designed to pinpoint where the carbon dioxide comes from and where it is going on a global scale, providing us with clues about climate change now and in the future.
We Have Liftoff!
OCO-2 is now in orbit after successfully launching on July 2 from Vandenberg Air Force Station, California. OCO-2 is NASA's first mission dedicated to studying atmospheric carbon dioxide, the leading human-produced greenhouse gas driving changes in Earth's climate.
how.....'exciting'

I vaguely remember something like that near the entrance but not sure if that's what you're talking about or not...if it is, then I didn't see anything or go look at it to be honest. We just did the tour that showed us the old mission control room and the rockets and screwed around inside for a couple of hours.

Falcon 9 is 1.1 million. See my above post for the SLS.
