Recommend a riding mower that doesn't suck

I have 7 acres, cut 3-4 and looking to get a riding mower for my 12 year old to start helping cut the grass. I have a small Kubota tractor with a belly mower but not comfortable with him driving it yet plus it puts a lot of hours on just mowing.
Don't want to break the bank, I did that with the Kubota and all the attachments, so what do you consider a decent rider out of the cheap models under $1500, ie. Craftsman, JD (at Lowes, HD), Cub Cadet? Or is there really one?

Was not all that impressed with the recent JD 130 model I was able to use.

Dixie chopper silver eagle. I paid $7300 for mine and it is badass. If you're gonna be cutting that much grass, go ahead and spend the money on something that will last. If not you'll be buying a new mower every couple years. Residential mowers are built for that much use.

Guess I wasn't clear. I'm still using the Kubota to mow but want the second mower for the kid to 1. Help cut down on some of my mowing and 2. Have him learn how to work a little

I was running the tractor at about 12 cutting the grass. Rear mower too, probably easier to run a belly mower.

If you really want him to work, get him a push mower.

If you have a 4 wheeler, get a pull behind mower.

Stay away from a Toro. Big POS.
Size that big of a yard, look for something with no less then a 5' cut. Or, just cut the front half once a week and do all the second week.
Or, fence in all and get a bunch of goats. I'm really thinking of doing this.

Ah gotcha. Well most of the big box brands are the same mower any. Just get the engine you want and be done with it.
My husqvarna and my dads Craftsman have done well, but my father in laws Cub Cadet is absolutely crap. FWIW

Cub cadet. Zero turn 46" for that much to mow. But it's not $1500.

Not for that price range. They are all made by MTD. Do yourself a favor and spend a bit more and get a low end commercial grade one.

Cub cadet, Troy bilt, Husqvarna, John Deere and just about every other mower is junk. I have had a Troybilt Colt 46" ZTR going on 5 years now. I bought it as a repaired return from Lowes. I paid $2000 for it and it has been ok. I recently had to change the PTO clutch and pulley out. If I was you I would just look for a decent Exmark or Dixie Chopper that is used at a decent price and go that route. If it holds up, your kid could use it later to earn cash from the neighbors. I used to mow lawns for $20 with a pushmower when I was 12. I BET i cleared $200 every weekend at 12 years of age.

Responses are what I expected. May have to raise the budget a bit and look for a used low end commercial unit. That or spend 400 at a garage sale and hope it lasts two years.

My old man has a John Deere x300 with a Kawasaki motor.
500 hours in 10 years and only problem was a burnt coil and the hood is busted.

My folks mow about 4acres........just bought a JD 60" cut with Kawasaki motor. I think it was about 6k at the JD store..........sounds like you want a cheaper one.
Takes them about 1:30 to know it........used to take 3hrs on a traditional mower.

+1 for a good ole snapper rear-engine, single blade. You won't be able to kill it. Drive disk may slip a little in tall, wet grass, but it'll teach him patience

Get a Zero Turn!!!!!!!!!!!!! My 12 year old grandson cut some grass with mine this week and didn't want to get off the mower.

I recommend not a zero turn for a kid if you have ditches or slopes or anything. Those things are easy to roll. I know a grown man who almost drowned a few weeks ago after flipping one into a ditch. Had the roll bar up and everything.
